Updates to the X

When is Verizon going to get it's act together and just release the new android version 2.3 to the Droid X. The build is out there. I don't care about other phones getting it first like the the thunderbolt or incredible. Put it on the X for crying out loud.

Backup all Data before doing this...

1. Uncheck "Back up my data" under Settings/Privacy

2. Click Factory Data Reset/Reset Phone

3. After reset is complete only Active Phone but do not input Google Email information

4. Once phone is at homepage go back into Settings/Privacy and make sure the Automatic Restore option is unchecked, even if grayed out, activate "Back up my data" and quickly disable "Automatic Restore"

5. After being sure that the Automatic Restore option is off it will be safe to log into Google and you can continue installing preferred apps and custom settings.

This process will stop all applications and settings from restoring automatically and restoring original issues that usually resolve a number of issues.

It is speculation and room for argument and discussion. Personally, the last update caused my phone to have issues. Who to put that blame with, whether it is Moto, or Verizon, I don't know.

VZW and Motorola were both pressured to rush the release of 2.2 and look at all the people whining after it was released with some bugs.  The 2.3 update is likely to be the final update that the Droid X gets, so they better make it right to begin with.  I don't understand what all the rush to get 2.3 is about.  It's not like 2.3 introduces a lot of fixes, it mostly just streamlines things and gives several new system tools for managing your phone.  Most of this stuff is available free from the marketplace for 2.2.

VZW forces the updates to people's phones, so as I said before, they better make certain it is 100% stable before releasing it.  If you're in such a hurry you can obtain 2.3 if you must have it now.

It really wont matter if they get it now or later, they are never happy anyway...  I want, I need, Give It Now and don't forget the favorite one, I will sue if I don't get it now. I really do not hope that your life is that simple that a update on a phone really makes that big of a difference.

It only took a day before users complained about having GB after Froyo update.  They did even get the update installed before they wanted another.

I have seen a few people with unofficial GB on their phone and its pretty flawless battery is lasting anywhere from 2 to 3 hrs longer on avg also its much faster with apps and the web I guess it irons out the kinks from 2.2 and adds a few new tools and changes the colors of the menus and the layout slightly while it isn't making it a new phone it is a huge improvement. I am personally waiting on the vw release which im sure is close but its worth the wait made me forget what a huge fumble 2.2 was for the phone and that moto or vw didn't try to even patch some of the issues but gave us a huge crappy madden demo file instead. And the benchmarks now on the quadrant usually avg 1450 both the phones with gb were seeing 1750-1800 everytime it really showed how much they have this phone collared to begin with when a new os update boosts performance so much.

***I posted this reply elsewhere in the Droid X blog as well.

After reading 4 pages of mostly disgruntled tech heads, I can understand to some degree. On one hand, you have a client who would love nothing more than to download a ROM update and start playing around with it. On the other hand, Verizon wants the update to function well for the user.

Here is why it is so frustrating....in my personal opinion....Verizon is SILENT about upcoming updates. When you ask a Verizon tech, they say they have no knowledge of an upcoming system update, despite the fact that the system update is all over the blogs. There are also leaked versions that are available to download too, that aren't officially sanctioned by Verizon.

I think it would serve Verizion, very well, from a customer service standpoint, to at least say something like 'we're testing Gingerbread right now and working out the bugs and will release it as soon as it is ready'

It's a vague statement with no promises, but sounds re assuring to all of us that truly enjoy our phones. It makes Verizon interactive with the tech community and it's customers as well and it gives us something to look forward to.

I sincerely hope someone that works for Verizon reads this and can make something of it. We just want to be happy customers that aren't kept in the dark until the last second.....is that asking to much, considering how much we pay a month for service?Granted it's good service, but it's expensive.

i asked about this very thing to a few store reps and they simply say its about pushing the newest phones if you want the new os get the new phone thats why its so sketchy on launch dates of new phones also if every one could pinpoint the release date more people would be trying out a few different phone when up grade time comes rather than just picking a phone but hey we all know money drives vw not the consumers we learned it the hard way when we got crapped on with 2.2 and that 2.2.3 pointless update that really helped nothing as long as we pay our bill they dont care.

Even though I am anti-update, I have read it has been released to a limited number of customers. Interesting that no one has reported receiving it (not the leaked version) yet.

Everything I've read promises the "smoother" functioning phone galaxie speaks of.

And since it's being forced on us, I have no choice but to be optimistic.

I know people who have the leaked GB and they rave about it. It makes the droid x even better than ever. Verizon/Motorola should be proud of GB, I can't wait until its get pushed to all droid x owners.

Hope you realize that a large amount apps has not been updated to function with GB correctly, all I really see is a number of users having issues because of incompatible apps and blaming the OS and demanding a new update...

The reason VZW doesn't say anything about an update is that it could always turn out to have a fatal flaw and the entire update get scrapped.  Remember when VZW and Motorola stated that the Droid X would have Flash by late summer 2010?  There were all sorts of people complaining the definition of "late summer" and forming all sorts of conspiracy theories.

What's after GB? I want that one? I hadn't used GB yet but lets just get a jump on the next Version. I heard not only will it not have a Bootloader, but a completely blank system and everyone can invent what ever phone system along with customizations until the owners little hearts desires. There's also rumor it comes stock with a car lighter and DUEL cupholders :smileyhappy:

The rumor is the next update will be angel food cake. It will arrive the same time 5G does, around the time the then often delayed Droid Bionic finally gets released with hand-written invitations from Moto asking owners to please rooot the phone.

All of this happens in 2012 and I don't have to tell you what that means.........

Unless they pay me too root I am out, I will have no security to make sure I am getting official upgrades that wouldn't do something horrible like give my personal information to third-party entities. 2012 you say?

Does anyone know why were expecting this update? Other then there was a leak? It seems Moto posts what updates will be coming out, where as vzw will wait until it is released. I imagine no body remembers when and if there was ever a official announcement that it would.

Because the recent leak appears to have been pushed to a few lucky users devices and the image file has the proper signatures to be installed without being modified which proved it wasnt a Beta because the image doesnt normally carry the correct signature data.   This doesn't mean this is final build but this usually indicates that its may be ready and the few were just the test batch, 2.2 was released the same way..

uuuh, my post was sarcastic and not meant to be taken seriously. Angel food cake, 5G, roooting, etc., and 2012 was a reference to the rumored end of the world.

Perhaps, I should keep my smartazz thoughts to myself if they are whizzing over people's heads.

wildman, would you recommend performing a hard reset and even re-formatting the SD card BEFORE installing the update IF it ever comes?

After the last update caused my phone(s) problems, I heard after the fact that both might have been a good idea to do before any update and could have prevented some of the issues experienced.

Do you agree and suggest others do this and are you going to do it yourself?
