Using Google Maps and GPS abroad

While abroad (in GSM countries) I have trouble using GPS and Google Maps on my Moto Droid.  I know, the phone is CDMA.  But why doesn't this work:

  • Prior to leaving I pre-cache the map segments that I want to use (Google Maps feature)
  • Prior to leaving I put the phone in Airplane Mode
  • After arriving abroad (in a GSM country) I find a WiFi and connect
  • I launch Google Maps (outdoors with full sky) and it tries to find a GPS fix...

but nothing happens.  It won't get a satellite fix in the new locations despite having data net connectivity.

I have an app called GPS Test (ChartCross Ltd) that has a button for 'Clear AGPS' and "Update AGPS', but using those doesn't seem to help.

What don't I understand?

Could be a couple things, one, google maps doesn't work in all countries (though) that number is very small, especially if you are just looking at the map and not trying to navigate.  For a full list, click here: http://gmaps-samples.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/mapcoverage_filtered.html.  Second, your GPS, being that it is a phone intended for the U.S., may just not work in other countries.

Scratch all that, try this:  http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google%20Mobile/thread?tid=4aa926e0491ac61e&hl=en  Seems as though it has something to do with being in airplane mode, but it sounds like the fix may not always work.
