Using WiFi and 3G at the same time

If I am hooked up to wi-fi, but my cell/3G connection is still active, is there a way to ensure that I'm maximizing my wi-fi use and minimizing depletion of my data plan?

  1. Turn off the cellular data connection.
  2. Change the advanced wifi settings to have the wifi never sleep.
