I am currently using the Visual Voice Mail service that is built into the Droid X firmware. There is a Visual Voice Mail App in the Verizon Section of the Android Market.
If I download and install this App, will I lose my messages? Is there advantages to having this App versus the one I subscribed to when I first got the phone?

It is the same app.
When I got my X last july, I didn't realize that VVM came pre-installed and tried to download the app from the market. The phone actually scolded me for trying to do so.
Just for fun, try to install VVM from the market and see what happens. At worst, you wil have to un-install it so it won't be on your phone twice.

Also, there are other voicemail apps in the Market other than the genuine Visual Voicemail. From what I hear, those apps are to be avoided like the plague.

The on from Market will not work and will force you to uninstall the 3rd party app because of the prop file scans and authorize only the preinstall VVM app and you can not change this without voiding warrenty.

Aah, that's why the X gave me a verbal drumming when I tried to install the market version.
