Did you sign up for visual voice mail? If you did, it would change the way you are notified of new voicemail messages. To find out you can check online on your myverizon.com account or call customer care or check the receipt of service change from when you upgraded.
If you are signed up for visual voicemail you can get it taken off your account and use voicemail as normal, however, I would really recommed that you set up the visual voicemail. I have it on my Blackberry and my Moto Droid and think it is one of the best features Verizon offers.

I am wondering if you have the messaging indicator off?
- Go to your voice mail & enter in your password
- Go to more personal options (press 4)
- Go to messaging indicator (press 1)
- Make sure it is on

Ok, I just tried that, and it was already set to ON.
I never had a problem with my other phone that I upgraded from, (it was a chocolate).
Any more suggestions please.....
