I just bought this phone today. I switched over my phone number from ATT&T to Verizon. However, I am not able to send/receive text messages except to the people I share a family plan with. Please help me fix this.

If you ported your number, it may take a few days for everything to be resolved and to port fully. If you are still having issues after say, three days, have Verizon check the provisioning on your account for text messaging.
