Wifi vs 3G

Is there a way to make the phone just use whats available automatically, for example use Wifi if its there and 3g if its not. I guess I don't understand the advantages to each just yet, but do realize that WiFi is not available everywhere. What should I be using? When should I change it, etc.

You can leave wifi on and if there is an available, remembered network it will connect automatically or, if not, will default to 3g, but this will use more battery as it will continue to search for a network. I would suggest leaving it on 3g and only turn on wifi when you are going to use it. This can be done easily by putting the power control widget on your homescreen, wifi on/off can be done with one click.
