Will Gingerbread Cause More Problems

I have been lucky with my Charge. I do not have half the problems that most are having. I do have a few quirky things that are annoying but not bad.

My question is, will the Gingerbread update cause me to have problems that I am not having now? It is my luck that it will and I am not sure if the download is worth it. Can the update be reversed if I don't like it for any reason?

Please let me know if anyone has any thoughts on this.

Gingerbread SHOULDN'T cause any additional problems, however, these updates sometimes come with some.  I personally feel that these issues come from data conflicts between the old and new firmware.  Verizon and the OEMs try very hard to make updates where a factory reset is not neccessary.  IMHO, this is something that should be done.  I feel the best way for a smooth updgrade is to, before accepting it, make sure your phone is fully charged, and on the charger, and do a factory reset before upgrading.  After the factory reset, skip the setup (if the android screen pops up, touch all four corners clockwise, starting at top left) and accept the upgrade.  I've heard some issues with the upgrade not showing up right away, but you can try menu>settings>about phone>check for system updates.  The factory reset will not touch anything on your SD card, however, you will need to do any setup on your phone again, though many system settings, your contacts, and your apps should return automatically after you sign into gmail.  Because of this, it's best to let your phone sit for some time after the upgrade until all this stuff syncs up.  Unfortunately, there is no way to reverse the upgrade, and the notification will just keep returning if you ignore it.  Good luck, and hopefully this helps.

demmo86rt,

Thanks for the info. If I do a factory reset will I have to download all my apps again? If so, how do I get back the ones from say the free app of the day and any purchased apps?

When you say touch all four corners clockwise are you meaning the screen? And then when you say I will have to do setup on my phone again, are you talking about all my e-mail accounts and things like that?

Thanks agin for the information.

vimitt,

You do NOT have to do a Factory Reset in order to install Verizon's OTA update or to do the manual update yourself.  Neither  the OTA or manual update will do a factory reset on your Charge phone.  So far, to my knowledge, nobody who did the factory upgrade did a factory reset first.  Don't do a factory reset because you will have to re-install all those things you mentioned and it's a lot of hassle.

Only time will tell re Gingerbread 2.3.6 causing more problems.

As JerryF stated, you do not HAVE to factory reset before an update, but in my experience of "updating" phones, it does help avoid some of the little quirks that may come about if you don't.  I see it as more of a safety step.

To answer your questions, yes, you will have to download your apps again, however, the market does remember your apps (go to menu>settings>backup & restore and make sure both boxes are checked) and paid apps (in the market) you will certainly be able to reinstall for free.  I don't use the amazon app store, so I'm not sure about that one.

Yes, touch the corners of the screen, this bypasses the setup screen and will take you to your homescreen.  Unfortunately, you will have to set up e-mail accounts and such.

Again, this is not an absolutely neccessary step, but could save you from some potential issues.  You have to weigh the pros and cons of having to re-setup your phone again against the possiblility of issues popping up.  The factory reset can also be done after the update if you decide to skip it, but I think it is more effective if done beforehand.
