Just curious about the R word and if its legal to discuss now. Not that I would discuss the use of it. I just want to know if its allowed to be mentioned here?

With the announcement it is basically just saying it is not a violation of intellectual property to alter software.  Rooting is legal but that doesn't mean it will be supported by the phone companies.  They can still use policy to discourage it.  Violation of TOS would be one they can pull your account for that, Not pushing updates to Rooted phones would be another.

It also means that TOS violation or not it is perfectly legal to download apps that are available that alter the functioning of the phone or software.  Again it can still be a TOS but it will not end up in court.  You can't be prosecuted for it but they can refuse you service.

Kind of like counting cards at a casino.  Nothing illegal about it but if they figure out you're doing it they can refuse service.  Funny cause all it really is when you really get down to it is playing the game well.  Advanced strategy if you will.  Rooting and other altering software is fine as long as you are capable of supporting any alterations you made yourself.

You could use the word in a post to get to the 'root' of the issue and see what happens! :smileyhappy:  Just J/K Verizon

It'd be nice to mention, but I'd really rather not have people discuss that stuff on this board.

If a user is advanced enough and has the drive to completely change their phone, then there are better places to discuss this.

On top of that, you don't want to confuse the VZW customer on these forums if you talk about stuff like LauncherPro and CyanogenMod. Or you post about apps that are made for phone who root and install custom roms and the casual customer comes along and says it doesn't work, or know why it's being mentioned.

Finally, even though rooting is legal, it doesn't necesarily mean that VZW wants you discussing it. I mean, you're still gonna void your warranty.

i'm going to go out on a limb and guess that some of this thread will be editied shortly. i've been edited and sent friendly messages (a few times) warning me not to discuss things that are against your "terms of service." it's like you said, they probably don't want the casual user stumbling across a thread that will ruin their phone and then vzn has to deal with it. and just because congress has discussed this doesn't mean much. congress could formally anounce that throwing your phone on the ground is not illegal, but i doubt vzn is going to want threads about testing how hard you can throw it before it breaks.

LauncherPro is not just for rooted phones. It is for non-rooted, also.

{edit for TOS violation}
