Just got a droid x and learning to use it. Maybe a dumb question, but is the e-mail on all the time? I see e-mail notifications as they're recveived without asking for them.

The Settings in the email APP control the frequency that you'll see email being received. So yes, unless you do something to TURN OFF the auto-sync (receive or send) of yor email, it just arrives on a predetermined delivery schedule. You can check this out my launching your email APP and click on EMAIL SETTINGS ... then check the Email Delivery options.
