My phone went to sleep but when I hit the home key I ended up with a lock symbol on one side of the screeen and a thing that looks like a volume symbol. I want to go to the menu but no matter what key I hit, the screen won't change. I've tried turning the phone off and then on and removing and reinstalling the battery but nothing helps.

That's the slide lock. Touch the Lock symbol and drag it across the screen.
Also, that volume symbol is there so you can put your phone into silent mode without unlocking, if you drag that across the screen it will put it into silent mode.
