Text messages are normally saved to the SIM card. Since you have a Verizon phone, there is no SIM card to remove.

I don't have a smart phone but any important text I want to save I send them right to my email for safe keeping on the computer so something to think about for future reference. Mary

Well when you get a working phone any new important texts that come in you want save you just hit forward and put your email address in the to field and send and it goes to your email. If you want to send back from email to phone then you use your10digitnumber@vzwpix.com. You have to do this before the phone dies. I think you are out of luck getting the texts back unless you did this before hand. Take it to a verizon store and maybe they can get them back. If they were that important they should have been backed up to begin with. Mary

There are applications in the Android Market for backing up your text messages to either the SD card or an email address.
Just search "SMS backup" on the Android Market.
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.
