1. Is it possible to add a shortcut on the Home page with a group of contacts? I'd like to have a separate shortuct for frequently contacted people (the People widget takes up a whole screen which I don't want).
2. Is it possible to assign ringtones to a contact group, rather than assigning ringtones individually?

There is no native way to create a shortcut on the home screens for group contacts. I recommend going to the Market and searching for any apps or themes that may benefit you. That's the great thing about Android, usually there's something there! Make sure you read the full description to make sure it fits your needs.
Its also not possible to make a group ringtone, only to assign individually for each person in the group. But it's a great suggestion and I'll raise the feedback up to HTC.

If the people widget with three or six contacts is still too big, you can add a small icon for each contact. Long-press on the screen where you want it, then choose Shortcut>Person.
Edited to add: Sorry, I just noticed you said GROUP of contacts. But there's probably a way to do it anyway. I'll check it out...
Is it possible that Verizon could actually help a customer with a problem without saying " you signed a contract, rt? "sorry, you'll have to wait your 2 years" ( BTW, thank you Claudia for that help) So Verizon gets my $240, a single mom who is losing her house and has not worked in a year. Why did I ever leave A T & T.
I was lied to by a Verizon store that added a 3rd line telling me that I wouldn't be charged for it. I'm being charged over $10 a month for the next 2 years ($240) for a phone that doesn't exist because someone in Verizon store at closing time wanted to sell me an iPhone that I didn't need. All I wanted to do was have them fix the new cell phone that stopped working. Thanks Verizon, great customer service.
