recipient receives numbers instead of text

There have been three occasions now that the person to whom I send a text message receives a string of numbers in stead of text. Any ideas why this is happening? I assume it may be their cell phone service is not compatible with Verizon.

I would agree it is more likely their phone than yours. But as for not being compatible to VZW, I don't know
