stop email notification

On my droid, I set up my email accounts and usually left the setting on never for "email check frequency" and left off the check for email notifications. When I travelled I'd turn it on and it would work.
I set up my Droid charge the same way but I ALWAYS get notified when an email is received. Do I have to remove the accounts entirely to stop the notifications. On the older Droid I could just stop the notifications.
What should I do?

Don't know about the stock e-mail app, but I'm using K-9 Mail (highly recommend) and have it set to "Never" in "poll frequency" menu option. Whenever I want to check my mail I do it manually by clicking "check mail" in the menu. Like you, if I'm traveling I will change the polling frequency from "never" to "1 hour." Hope this helps.
