I'm writing this for a friend since we cannot find the answer. How do you turn off the 3G on the Droid X? We figured it will help on the battery life like it does on my Eris. Thanks.

I understand where you are coming from but the app that I suggested will give the best of both worlds because it does allow you to allow only required apps when it is needed.... I see that we both have different views on how to accomplish this. Both can work it just depends on what the OP wants.

Is that the only option? If I'm correct, in airplane mode, you cannot recv or make calls. On my Eris, you can turn off the 3G and still keep using phone as is except for internet service & maybe for some aps. Shall we assume 3G cannot be turned off on this model phone? I would be really suprised that there is no other option other than airplane mode. Thx

on your eris when you turn off 3g can you make calls/use internet or just use it for games/music/pics/etc, like the dx in airplane mode??
do you really think there's a mode that turns off 3g, to save the batt, but everything still works?

Two utilities you can try, and both are in the market.
Quick Settings: App to toggle some basic settings, including data network. Accessible from the notification bar. Configurable. Infrequently updated. Audio settings a little buggy. Free.
Extended Controls: Widgets which do the same, including notification bar accessiblity. Look, feel and config highly customizable. Costs a few $ and uses home screen space.
I've used both, but like the granier control I get from the Extended Controls widgets.
Data connectivity types can be changed depending on the type of data network you're on.
Best,
Mike

JuiceDefender Ultimate works best for me... It allows you to place a widget on desktop to toggle off wifi and data transmission all together until toggled back on...

The user just wants to disable data and only when they don't need it, there isn't a way to disable data off and on easily,
1. If you use airplane mode this turns off radio to receive calls as well
2. If you disable data through settings the data is off until you go through the process to turn it back on.
Plus juice defender you can prioritize apps access to the data and when and this way the needed apps like email can still access data to retrieve emails but other apps that isn't a high priority are restricted from data except when you allow it. I have noticed a nice amount of improvement of my battery life since installing.
I set mine to allow me to drop status bar and click to activate and disable...

What Post was you reading?? Juice Defender monitor data usage and does just what user wants, it can automatically disconnect data at times or not needed, and also they can disable and reenable at a simple click.

excuse me but the op wants to turn off 3g.
again, where does it say anything about data, other than "help on the battery life".
bottomline, airplane mode is the easiest.

Are you not understanding the 3G is data connection????? Using Airplane mode turns your device into a PDA because you cant text, browse web or make or recieve call, as you pointed out they just want to increase battery life.
This is like saying to turn off engine on a car while you are driving to save gas.. Airplane Mode wont help if you plan on still using the phone as....... A PHONE.

"Are you not understanding the 3G is data connection?????"
yes i understand.
apparently the op thinks dx 3g can be disabled and the phone is still be functional for call/internet/texting and why i offered up the only way to disable 3g is with airplane mode.
i asked the op way back, if his eris is able to call/text/internet with 3g toggled off and he hasn't replied.

bearone21 I have not replied because I had to go out of town today. Now as I was saying earlier, on my Eris, I can disable my 3g and the phone IS still functional. I can call, I can send text msgs, play games etc and by turning it off, it really DOES save on the battery life. This is why my friend was asking how to turn off the 3g on their Droid X to see if it will also save on the battery and still be able to use the phone. Airplane mode cuts just about everything off. On my Eris, I have a stock widget on one of my screens that I just tap to turn on and off. Of course I turn it on when I need to go online or use GPS but just as a basic phone with also having text capability, disabling the 3g is fine. My friend wants the same. Any other suggestions?

You do realize 1X data uses more power than 3G? It's also slower so a longer time period that the radio is active. If your friend is pulling a 3G tower that is far away, sure you could save power, however if the 3G and 1X are on the same tower which most are now, you'll use more battery power going 1X.
I remember the Eris having an issue with it's 3G radio, and this may be the reason you got better battery life by disabling it. That was one of the MANY issues which made the Eris the shortest lived Smartphone I have ever seen.
The Data enable/disable sounds like it will be the best choice as your friend will be able to stop All data, 1X and 3G. It will have to be enabled to send/receive txts though.

I am guessing you are not wanting to pay for a app for yjis because with JD I can turn off data and still text and take calls without issues.

Thanks for your feedback. Adding to what was stated, if you want to place the phone in Airplane mode, please follow the steps below. However, when in Airplane mode, you are not able to make or receive calls and text messages, as well as the data for access to Picture messages, email, etc. This mode disables the network accessing the device. Using the suggestions provided without putting it in Airplane Mode would be a better choice while still being able to make and receive calls, text message, etc.
As also the turning the Phone On and Off in many countries are required by law while on board an aircraft.
To enable or disable Airplane mode:
1. Press HOME > MENU, then tap Settings > Wireless controls.
2. Select the Airplane mode check box to enable or disable Airplane mode. When enabled, the Airplane mode icon ( ) displays in the status bar. When you disable Airplane Mode, the phone function is turned back on to the previous state of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi is restored.
