Downloading e-mail contacts

I downloaded by cable my e-mail contact list to a file labled Contacts on my Droid.  However, the Droid only recognizes contacts I had previously entered manually.  Please advise the proper procedure for such file transfers

What was the file type you copied over? Did you attempt to import the file into your Contacts app?

Thanks for the file format suggestion.  I found a file formatting utility in Windows Live Mail and was able to create a .csv file for transferring to the smartphone.

Hi Easy1,

I'm glad to see that you were able to create a CSV file. Did this resolve your contact transfer concerns? You can also update your contacts by syncing your Gmail contacts with your phone and then simply upload the CSV file http://vz.to/162LxcU to your Gmail account.
