Droid Razr is randomly shutting down, won't turn back on until plugged in

Two days ago I was browsing the internet on my Droid Razr, and it suddenly just instantly shut off. I tried to turn it back on, but to no avail. Thinking the battery had somehow died (even though I had just recently charged it), I plugged it in, and it said it had 80% battery. I turn it on, and it starts up just fine. So I figure it was just a glitch and go on with my day. Later on, the same thing happens. Now it's gotten to the point where it shuts off almost instantly. It won't turn on even if I try a hard reset (holding the power button and volume down button for ten seconds).

Before now I've never had a problem with this phone. Any idea what could be causing it?

I am having the same problem. It has been continually getting worse. Yesterday if shut off by itself 5 times in a 4 hour period. The last time it shut off it came back to the droid startup screen with the red eye image on it and an it won't start up all the way. I have tried force shutting it off and starting over but it still won't turn on completely.

As you suggested it's probably the battery.  If your phone is out of the one year warranty period and you do not have TEC from Verizon, Motorols will replace the battery for $60+-.  But you will be without a phone for about 10 days.

First I'd try some easy things in this order.  Use a different charger and cable.  Do a cache clear.  Run in Safe Mode for a day or so.  Do a factory reset.  If none of these help it's most likely the battery or the internal charging circuit or charging port.

Did you ever figure this out? Mine has gotten to the point where it doesn't even turn on with the charger. It's just luck of the draw. I keep plugging it in and unplugging it waiting for something. I know it registers when I plug it in because if I try plugging it into the computer the white light comes on indicating a too-low charge rate. For the record I use the wall charger that came with my phone and have also tried two other wall chargers.
