Message+ on old phone

I have replaced my Droid Maxx, but want to use it with Verizon Message+. It synchronized my old messages fine, but I can't send or receive new ones. It sent a text to my new phone with a code, but I can't find a place to manually enter it on my old phone.

Is the old phone turned off, unactivated?  Are they both using the same number?  The currently active phone is the one that should be able to send and receive messages.

If it's on wifi and setup I believe the other phone can access it. I believe you have to turn it off then factory reset the phone and it would make sure no one can turn it back on.
