A release date hasn't been announced; rumor is first quarter, but who knows? Whenever the update is ready, Verizon will issue a press release, usually a few days before the update starts rolling out.

And how can we be notified of said press release when it does, in fact, come out? I'm not going to be hawkishly watching Verizon's website for some press release.

You could sign up for an RSS feed:
or hawkishly watch the Razr/Razr Maxx sections on this forum for all the posts that will start up along the lines of 'the update is here', 'I just got my update', 'the update just ruined my phone', 'when will my Razr get Key Lime Pie?'.

You can always wait for the phone to tell you the update is ready for download.

That's what I do. If I really want the update "bad" enough. I write the code for it, and don't bother with it. So far there is nothing past 4.0 that is over the top to me(I own a Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Note 2, Galaxy Nexus 4G, and a few other devices for references). I still don't see the hoopla.
