One reason may be a newer phone that's loaded with too many overactive apps updating and trying to sync.
This area would be some app settings with too much use of mobile data and not more set for Wi-fi only use. Such things as e-mail syncing, backups, weather Widgets / apps and more etc. I would start by checking all of my apps and their settings from your app device manager. Change setting as needed to reduce that data use.
It is always important to know what exactly is using the data so you can know the best way to manage it. I would love to assist with getting to the bottom of your data usage. What actions do you normally perform on your device? If you go to Settings>Data usage, scroll down. What are the top apps that are showing for data usage?
