anyway to get pictures off with a broken screen. will not connect to laptop and not backed up in backup assistant plus

If the Pictures are on your SD Card then simply pull the card phone off then you can use a Card Reader and pull them to your Computer = transfer..  But if the pictures are in the Internal memory it may be a bit hard to get them off unless you have a USB cord that goes between the phone and the Computer you might could Transfer them that way.. have you Tried this..

If none of that works you should start using cloud storage.  I.e. g+  vcloud Picasa etc. Something like this happens you don't have to rely on a SD card , computer and malfunctioning  device. Hope you can recover those

If you have a Google+ account you can automatically back up your photos/videos to your account. I think you get 15GB of storage. Well worth the price...FREE! You can then view your photos on any device, just log into G+. Delete the photos off you phone to free up storage space and they're still on G+.
