lost contacts

I lost most of my contacts on my phone. They are in the trash can on the website and I did not delete them. Why or what would cause this

If  your possibly using Google as your provider of your contacts Log into Gmail and you should be able to find them there Look for Gmail with a Down Direction Arrow.!  in the upper left corner of the Site page..
