Doesn't it just plug into your USB charging port?

When I plug it in, the phone shuts off. Came with no instructions so I want sure if I needed to know something

Most external power chargers are simply charged fully via a wall charger, and then when needed, plugged into the phone's USB charging port.  I have two different types, and mine don't shut my phone off, though.
