Our house phone is showing the message "Check TEL Line" and we have no dial tone. Has anyone experienced this?

People experience things like that all the time; but it doesn't matter what other pepole experience. What matters is what you can do to troubleshoot the problem.
The first thing you need to do is to find the Network Interface Device (NID). This is typically a small box mounted outside of a single family home. It is where the telephone line enters the home. If you have FiOS, you have an Optical Network Terminal instead of a NID.
Once you've located the NID, open it up. You should find a phone jack with something plugged in, or a phone jack labeled "test." If it has something plugged in, that;s the wire that feed your home. Unplug it. Now, take
Now, find a known good wired phone. Plug it into the empty jack or test jack. If you get dial-tone, there is a problem with the wires in your home. If you don't get dial-tone, there is a problem in the Verizon network. In that case, call Verizon.
If the problem is inside your home, you can call Verizon but the will charge you for repairs unless you have a wire maintenance plan.
To check your wires yourself, start by unplugging all telephone devices and testing each jack with that known good wired phone. If that doesn't find a problem, plug each device back in one at a time.
Good Luck.

Can all phones in house be disconnected at NID or elsewhere? Seems like a timesaver if problem's external.
