Incredible static when AT&T wireless callers call my Verizon landline

Hi everyone,

About 2 weeks ago I started encountering MAJOR static (we're talking fireworks finale), on occasional incoming calls to my home phone. The static is so loud and constant, that the caller is virtually un-hearable. They can hear me fine and they cannot hear any static.

Here's the weird thing. I started realizing this only happened when my friends/family with AT&T iPhones were calling. To see if I was right, I asked some family members who have other wireless carriers to give me call (Sprint and Verizon) from their cell phones. Those calls came in loud and clear. No static at all. To further prove my hypothesis, I had a friend call from his Blackberry (AT&T) wireless. Sure enough, static.

So now I'm 100% sure that it's strictly an AT&T wireless to Verizon landline issue. Has anyone else encountered this problem? And if so, is there a fix?

Thanks so much.

There is a Long Distance Repair Department,   Open a chat support session,  or call Verizon repair (1-800-VERIZON) and put in a report.  Make sure to have several examples of phone numbers that show the problem, and if you can remember date and time of calls - that would be helpful to them, I am sure.   I have heard of the issue myself, I haven't seen it with AT&T specifically but I have had that problem before with friends that used sprint.   when I called in, I got the run around with regular support, until I got someone that opened a Long distance repair ticket, and that department seemed to understand my problem better.

Thanks for your suggestion, Hubrisnxs. I called Verizon Repair and after a 15 minute runaround, I finally got to speak with a competent agent.

I was on the line with him for half an hour. He said I had already done all the hard work by narrowing down the problem to receiving AT&T wireless calls. He asked me a bunch of questions to help confirm my findings (ie, Do I hear any static when any other wireless callers called my landline? No. Do the callers hear the static? No. Etc.). Since I have a second line in my home (it's a fax line), we tested that one by calling it from my AT&T wireless iphone. There was immediate static on that line, too.

So Verizon ran a test on both lines and found no problems. No shorts, no switching problems. I was told there was nothing further they could do for me. When I asked if he could at least open a ticket and send it to Long Distance Repair, I was told he wasn't allowed to because they found no problems. There would be nothing to explore.

His recommendation was that I call AT&T because Verizon believes it's an AT&T issue. I guess that'll be my next course of action, but I can just imagine the phone call: Hi AT&T, I realize you provide only my wireless service, but I'm having a static issue on my Verizon landline when AT&T wireless callers call me.  Can you help?

Wait, the problem's on your LAND line?

Yes.

You should call Verizon.

I'll report back after I speak with AT&T. Who knows? Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I have the same problem and I'm sure it's the whole ATT cell vs Verizon landline.  Can't get through to Verizon support to see what they're going to do about it.  Maybe it's a giant conspiracy to atttract new Verizon cell users
