I called Verizon today about removing an old service line on my house to make it easier to re-side (I've lived there 10 years and haven't used a landline. Plus the house had the weird old 4-prong phone outlets, so I'd want an updated service even if/when I do add landline services). I'd mentioned that it was old enough that it said "Bell Atlantic" on it. I was told Verizon couldn't remove it and I'd have to contact Bell Atlantic, but they didn't have a contact number for them. I told them there's no such thing as Bell Atlantic, and everything online says it merged and became Verizon. But still no help.

That is ridiculous. Anyone you talk to at Verizon should know that there is no number for Bell Atlantic anymore. Bell Atlantic is now Verizon.
Just like previous poster said just have your siding contractor take it down.
When my wife and I had new siding and windows installed the siding contractor simply removed the line from the pole in the street. They took it off the house and wrapped it up and set it back on the pole.
when we had Fios installed the man was looking and commented on you know there is no phone hook up to your home?
Have them remove it will be a battle since they know bell, Bell Atlantic , NYNEX (in my area) and Verizon in 2000 name change.
