Trying to work out account in collections

I recently signed up for service with verizon and got a new iphone at a great price.   Unfortunately I was incarcerated for a violation of probation about a week after I signed up for the service. I was recently released and wanted to work on getting my service back. I assumed that I would owe some fees with the hope of working something out to get my service established again. However when I called the woman said that I owe over 1,000 dollars and due to the fact that my account is in collections there is no adjustments that could be made.  My original bill of 173 was due on Feb. 20th which did include a 35 dollar activation fee.  So assuming I still owed for the additional two months of service at roughly 140 a month.  Even with that it doesn't add up to 1,000. But the simple fact she basically was like nope you have to pay all is absurd to me. Not even trying by saying well let me ask my supervisor or anything was just so rude. Even a pre-paid service company with customer service reps from another country try harder. What happened to trying to help the customer. Not even an attempt!

Verizon rep made no attempt to try and resolve any issues concerning account. Clearly they don't care if you are or were a customer!

We're sorry to learn of your experience with us regarding your services being restored, robg5547. We always want to be as helpful as possible and always want to ensure we provide all the details needed to understand the account balance. It sounds like your device payment on the phone may have been billed out due to non-payment and the closing of the account. You can log in to your My Verizon account to view the final bill and any charges here, http://spr.ly/66092zeGZ. You can also make a payment to your account here, http://spr.ly/66002zeGw.
