Caller ID now showing "SPAM?"

When someone calls me my caller ID now shows the phrase "SPAM?" followed by the name of the caller.  Anyone know why this is suddenly happening? Is this a new feature? Is the call really a spam call and can it be blocked? I am using a digital voice land line.

Thanks!

Al

We get lots of complaints about unwanted computerized calls, and we get it—no one likes robocalls. To help you identify them, we've added a new "Spam Alerts" feature to your home phone's Caller ID.

Beginning on 12/18/17, your Caller ID will show "SPAM?" before numbers that have been identified* as a possible unsolicited call.

For more information including ways to block robocalls and how to report numbers that are not spam, please click here. (https://www.verizon.com/support/residential/consumer-education/robocalls.htm)

*A complex and always-improving algorithm is used to determine which calls match the SPAM criteria. While we're focused on identifying and alerting you to these types of calls as much as possible, you may still receive unsolicited calls from spammers/scammers as these calls will not be blocked automatically. You still choose which calls you want to answer and which ones you don't.

I remember reading online that this was being done, it’s a marked call from an established service.  So you can just ignore it.

i see Verizon Wireless does this https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/caller-name-id-faqs/

so it’s probably another service on the home phone service. It is see this link.

So this looks like a great beginning. It appears that verizon is finally acknowledging that they have a responsibillity to protect their paying customers from fraud and harassment. This is great that they no longer say "we don't have the technology"! WHOPEE! They did figure out how to create a blacklist.

From the FAQ it looks like the spam reporting app only works on Android phones. Did I read that right? I can't report spammer from my call history on my PC? Or from my windows or Apple phones? The App says that it Verizon provides "10 days free". Now my euphoria is tempered by the reminder that this is Verizon and customer service is defined as how does the customer serve their corporate goals?

A wonderful extension of the anti-spam service would be to allow me to optionally choose to have any Spam? caller auto-routed to Voice Mail. Currently I almost never answer any number that is not in my cell phone contact list or on the land line if the Caller ID is not the name of family, friend, or collegue.

You can also report nuisance calls to add to their list:

Telephone number categorization and phone spam feedback

I am now getting local buisnesses showing up in caller ID junk calls. I get Capital Health, a local hospital a lot and it is some kind of unwanted solicitation. This needs to be looked into.
