I have Lifeline landline service and there is no dial tone for the past two hours. No one can call in to my line and I can't call out. The problem began when a friend tried calling me. When I went to pick up, the line was silent and I could not hear any sound and then abruptly there was some weird sound on the line similar to that alert sound that you hear on TV when there is some important message like for a tornado or something. I hung up, assuming the problem must be on their end because they have a cell phone, but when I tried calling them back I could not get any dial tone. When they try calling my line they can't get through and I can't get any dial tone to call out. My neighbor is not having issue with their landline so it seems the problem is just with my line. It was working fine earlier today when I made  a call.

Also, I tried to use Verizon help chat but the AI bot will not connect with a live agent or provide any assistance to get the problem fixed

Is this a copper wire landline?  If so, I'd borrow someone's phone to call Verizon and see if they can change it to a VoIP landline service, as copper wire landline service is soon to be decommissioned (was supposed to happen this year, but was pushed out to 2027).  The infrastructure is falling apart and won't be maintained any longer.  My dad had the exact same problem with his copper landline going dead last year (he's with Blue Logo Place) and had to upgrade to a newer technology.

I think so. I don' like the VOIP type of service because it never worked when I tried it. I could never get a dial tone to use it so I cancelled the service and kept my regular landline. Verizon did not send any letter or notice regarding shutting off the landline. I live in apartments for disabled and we never had Verizon Fios here because Verizon would not install fiber optic wire in our neighborhood so have internet from a different company. I did not like the VOIP the other company provided so I kept my Verizon landline because I prefer a reliable service that works and won't go out with a power outtage.
