Ever since I signed up for the Regional Essentials plan in April, I have not gotten any messages on my home answering machine. I have an ATT cordless phone with an answering system. I do not want to use the in line Verizon voice mail.

Either call Verizon and have them take off the voicemail or log into the VM and make the ring count higher than the answering machine. Say VM at 6 rings and make your answering machine 4 or 5 rings.
