Interrupted Dial Tone not working when new voicemail

I have been using an answering machine; however, would like to go back to using my Verizon Voicemail (NOT FIOS).

The voicemail works; however, I do NOT get the interrupted dial tone to notify me of new messages, so I have to dial in the check every time.

I tried online chat, only to be told after over half an hour they could help me, that I had to call the 800 number. I called the 800 number, and got the automated message they had high volume, and I would have to wait.  I couldn't stay tied to the phone/computer any longer.  

I checked my account settings and don't see a setting that I need to change.

I tried submitting an order online, but it won't let me. 

Can someone tell me how I can get this resolved?
