New customers have problems with losing their old numbers?

Having been promised I could keep my old Comcast number, I became a Verizon customer yesterday, the technician tested the number before he left, and everything was OK until today. Now I am getting calls intended for a number that was hijacked from a long-standing Comcast customer. Now I can get no calls, except HERS. I am told this can be fixed but not until Monday.

Not very happy with my decision to switch. Is this a common occurrence for customers switching from Comcast to Verizon?
