Set up voicemail on new landline

When I try to set up my voicemail box for my new landline, the system refuses to recognize my phone number.

When I visit the Verizon  web page to set up voicemail, it says "Voice Mail is already on your phone line, but the mailbox needs to be set up." So there the web site at least seems to recognize my number (enough to know that fact).

But then the web page says: "Dial your Voice Mail access number, 1.888.234.6786 or you can dial *86 from your home phone." But I sadly cannot in fact dial *86 from my home phone: I get a "This call cannot be completed as dialed" recorded message.  And when I dial the other number, it asks me to input my phone number, & then it tells me that it doesn't recognize that number.

I can't get past that problem.

How can I get the Verizon voicemail system to recognize my home phone number & set up my voicemail box?

That would be Fios service.

My suspicion is that the telephone number isn't fully set up in Verizon's network/equipment. If it was, calls to the toll-free number or *86 wouldn't reach an error message.

Try power cycling the ONT (unplug the power for maybe 15 seconds & then plug it back in) and try to acess the voicemail system again.

If that doesn't work, contact Verizon Repair and have them check things out on their end.

A few questions to get the ball rolling: 🙂

Is the telephone number in question being ported to Verizon from another service provider?

If so, has the port been completed?

The opening description doesn't say specifically, but is this a Fios activation or is this copper POTS line service?

I received the phone number from Verizon, so it's not ported from anywhere. I'm pretty sure it's coming to the house via FIOS. At least the tech who set it up said something that made me think that. How would I check whether it's POTS or FIOS? When I go to the Verizon web page for my phone service, it says my plan is "Home Phone 3.0."

Looking further, I see on the web page that it describes my service as "FIOS Home Phone."

Thanks! I'll try that.
