My father's landline stopped working 8 days ago. Verizon is refusing to fix it, because my father does not want FiOS. My father lives in an area with spotty cell phone service, and is 74-years-old. All of his bills are paid ontime, and Verizon will NOT fix his land line.
Why won't Verizon repair the landline?
What happens if my father gets hurt and does not have access to a working phone that he pays for?
If the only landline service available in an area refuses to provide service, are the lack of choices indicative of a monopoly?

The problem is Verizon is trying to discontinue copper phone service because the new fiber optics are far superior. However if you live in New York State there is a provision that makes Verizon have to fix and or continue service. If you have life line service the phone must be repaired pronto.
if in NY go here http://www.dps.ny.gov and call them up and have them get your phone issue taken care of.
if any other state contact your states Public Utilities Commission or Public Service Commission via doing a google search.
when you say Verizon wants your father to get Fios I believe they want to switch him over to the better phone service.

They are not refusing to provide service but the new landline in now on fiber. He is not being forced to get FiOS. He can still keep his TV and internet with whoever he has. Verizon is moving away from copper lines and moving to fiber. There is no added cost to him but a fiber line will be way more reliable.
I have has TV, phone and internet on FiOS since 2008 and I’ve literally never had an outage on my landline.
I would have them install the fiber. He will be better off.
