100 Mbps Tier?

On May 11, Cablevision OOL will be launching a 101/15 Mbps tier for $100/mo, a clear shot at FiOS. Will FiOS match or beat this Cablevision tier in the next month? Are there any plans to upgrade speeds?

I have a question on this... Is that much bandwidth for a home user really necessary or noticeable? I mean if you are surfing a website many sites allow a certain amount of bandwidth per stream so if one has 100Mpbs will they really notice that much of a difference between 20Mbps and 100Mbps? There are bottlenecks along the way too. Don't get me wrong I would certainly love to have 100Mbps but for the residential user would they notice it.

Today on my 20/5 Fios service simultaneously I stream a VPN connection out to the west coast that supports my company laptop for email, etc. and a VOIP phone inside that, home VOIP (which my wife is on all the time), three other computers surfing the Internet, streaming Sirius-XM to my desktop and FIOS VOD running. All of this runs successfully without interuption.

I'm certainly not meant to be down on faster Internet. I just want to understand the practical side of it and if the cost benefits would be seen.

The biggest thing 100mbps down will give is the ability to stream true Blu-Ray quality HD video/audio. Right now "HD" video is not really HD video, its about DVD quality, or a little better. But it at a higher resolution, not a better picture. But we will not see anything like that until 100mbps is widely available.

I'm sure FiOS will match (at least) the speeds in markets where it makes them competitive to do so. Its the only logical choice.

Now only if Fios were available near me... 😞

I was also informed that some employees are given the opportunity of "testing" 100Mbps+ at their homes. As Herbz3 said, it will probably only roll out to places where there is competition for it. That being said, COMCAST, please boost your speed in my area so Verizon will do the same.

In North Carolina there is a city-owned ISP, Greenlight, who offers fiber at 100Mbps, for $300 though. Interestingly, Time Warner and Embarq are trying to get it shut down cause they can't compete. Engadget article here.

come on FiOS, i'm waiting for my 100/100 connection or at least 100/50 connection in NYC 😄 im sure they can catch up to cablevision

What Verizon needs to do for the future is to upgrade all central offices that are on BPON. I think I read somewhere that all newer buildouts are using GPON and all initial rollouts were on BPON. BPON technology I think is limited to 100 megabit. GPON can do over 1000 megabit DL.

Is there anything preventing Verizon from offering symmetrical speeds eg 50/50 and eventually 100/100. A few muni projects do tha tin the US and those symmetrical speeds are quite common in Europe and Japan.

The 101 Mbps content\speed that is being talked about is DOCSIS 3.0 technology on cable. [Cable], not fios, not copper, [cable]. If you do a little research about the cable experience you learn that the only way \ only time that content\speed will be available to the end user is when that end user is currently the only user in the local area neighborhood currently using that stream coming to the neighborhood, when all other things are also good. Which, of course, means that it will not be realized. The technology will increase the content\speeds realized, but still not equal to what fios already has in content\speed. And FiOS is still improving.

To add a bit of info to that. As long as the technology is the same from a few years ago, my info should be correct.

Each node will hold 300 connections. This runs both Cable TV and Internet. Now if only 10 out of the 300 connections are cable modems your speed will be faster because less people are using the internet on a given node. But the likelihood is that a lot more then 10 people have internet on a node. So the more people on it the slower your speeds will go.

But with Fios, it does not matter how many people have a connection in your area your speeds will stay the same. You do not have to fight for bandwidth with 300 other houses.

LOL, you know what's funny? OOL Bandwidth is shared with the rest of the surrounding area, meaning you probably won't be able to get the full 12MB/s speed. Also, Verizon is testing 100Mbps, and they already have 20Mbps upload, so if VZ unleashes a 100/20 package, it'll beat Cablevision, since you get your own bandwidth. And $300 activation fee? Pfft.
