I have Fios internet and wireless cell service from Verizon only, no land line. I removed my BBU battery and my Fios internet stopped working. I reinstalled and the internet worked again. I think you do need it for Fios internet.

There must be something wrong with your BBU. The battery is definitely only for voice backup. Does your ONT go down when you take out the battery?
