Intermittent loss of internet connection

hello,

my wifi and ethernet connected devices drop connection nearly every hour and typically around the 49th or 50th minute of the hour. I have tried rebooting the router and the ONT but it still happens. I have not had any issues for over a year and for a week now this is happening.

Any suggestions?

just to follow up, I think I resolved it. it seems the verizon router was the culprit. i switched my d-link router to take the ethernet connection directly from the ONT and released the verizon dhcp lease. the d-link booted up and has been working for over 24 hours without any issues.

i didnt realize I could use any branded router with the ont and am pleasantly surprised with faster speeds and no more intermittent connection.

thanks for all your help!

Can you check your DHCP Lease settings, both on your LAN and WAN? Specifically, I am looking at the Lease Duration.

Hampering connection every 50th minute of an hour, humm... this sounds like some malware attacking.

It is not every hour but I have noticed when it does happen, it occurs around the 50th minute of the hour.

For DHCP I mainly have a Release/Renew option and the

DHCP Settings for Network (Home/Office) show 1440 for Lease Time in Minutes

Is that what you were asking for? Couldnt find any DHCP specific settings. It is a G110 Quantum Router if that helps.

I have also discovered the option of "Group Key Update Interval" which is set to 3600 secs(1hr). Perhaps this is causing the issue. I changed to to 36000 (10hrs) for now but it can be set to 0 to never renew, which I understand has some security implications.

I will report back if this helps

GKU Interval should not cause that a big disturbance to disconnect the device.

I am not using WPS, not sure where you are getting that from. It is a WPA2 Group Key Update interval which can be set for both 2.4 and 5ghz.

Anything else I should check? Again, this issue popped up this last week but my connections have been stable for over a year until this happened out of the blue. Maybe more of a hardware issue there, ONT going out?

Next time your devices are disconnected, run to the G1100 to see whether there is a red globe. You are saying "Lost of Internet Connection," I am assuming LAN access is still fine during the loss of internet?

ONT is kind of a stable device. How old is your G1100 and ONT? 5 years, 10 years?

It seems this is kind of a RAM overflow too, somehow. If this is case, you need a replacement.

I did that already. I ran to the router and it showed the white globe and was stable. The g1100 is prob less than 2 years old but the ONT is at least 11 years old. It was here when I moved in over 11 years ago.

Not sure what you mean by RAM overflow...

and when it does drop for the minute or so, it is both Wifi connections and ethernet connected devices. I have a laptop and a Roku both connected via ethernet cables and they experience the same drop.

Ok. You did not answer my question: is your LAN access still fine when the Internet drops?

No it also drops. Its almost like the router loses connection because everything and anything connected to it (no matter how) gets dropped for a moment.

Should I ask verizon about the ONT?

No. You said your LAN drops as well, so no need to bring the ONT into the equation because LAN access does not go through ONT.

It seems the problem is at your router. It seems like a RAM overflow (just like I said in the previous posts) or a looping layer 2 connection somewhere.

Can you use WireShark to inspect TCP packets' Sequence Number (raw) and apply it as a filter? If you get a bunch of packets with the same Sequence Number, then you have a layer 2 loop. You need to find out where is your loop.

If there is a layer 2 loop, there can be a broadcast storm to make the router or switch crash. When the router is disconnected from the network for a brief moment, the layer 2 loop breaks, effectively dropping all the looping packets.

Do you have any other networking devices on your network? For instance, FiOS extenders, STBs, and third-party layer 2/3 devices?

Ok. So the G1100 is a problem, did you rent it from Verizon or buy it from Verizon? What's the model of the D-Link router? You don't want to bottleneck your speed subscription with a low NAT throughput router.

Do you have STBs? D-Link router cannot send guide data to them and upgrade them.
