NIM100 Firmware/MI424WR MoCA version.

Hi everyone!

What is the latest firmware for the NIM100 MoCA adaptor, and how do I get it? Also, do any of the MI424WRs support MoCA 2.0? I have heard the Rev I does, but not sure.

#1 You need to their NAT router connected to the ONT if:

a) You have Fios TV One (or if I got that so close, Fios One TV)

b) AND OR you need support from Verizon. If you use your own NAT router, support ends at the ONT.

#2 Other than for Fios TV One if you have that, what is the purpose of the Moca adaptor? For example you want to use a wired connection but not every network cable in your location is ethernet.

The MI424WR routers would be MoCA 1.0 or MoCA 1.1 depending on the age. Rev. I is MoCA 1.1. To get MoCA 2.0, you'll need a G1100 or newer.

For the NIM100 firmware, no idea what is the latest as my web searches aren't turning up anything for a firmware page. But if a SourceForge Busybox dump for the NIM 100 is of any indication, it hasn't been updated since 2009.

Yes, I know that. Wanted to clear it up. As for it being EOL. I know. It's "in a lab enviroment."

FYI, both of those devices were EOL'd by their manufactures long ago.  Consider the division of Motorola that made the NIM100 disappeared years ago as a result of the Google purchase of bits of Motorola & resale of said bits to other companies.  Neither device has received updates in years, including security patches.  Unless you're testing them in a lab or other protected environment, I wouldn't recommend using them in a production network.  Even if the network is just your home.

In particular, the Actiontec routers should no longer be used as a primary router due to their age and lack of security updates.  I might use one as an AP behind a modern, supported router.  But even then I'd think twice about it due to it's ancient WPA support and old WiFi standards.

If you give us more information about the problem you're trying to solve, we might have some more helpful suggestions.

I'm not trying to solve any problem, right now, I just wanted to be sure I had the latest, and the other post I seen, that claimed the Rev. I was 2.0 was correct. I'm a Network Admin, believe me, I know all about security.

Cool.  Many people who post here are end-users who don't know anything about security.  That's why the regulars here often provide basic info, as it's important to gently guide most users to best practices.

And we often get questions devoid of context, so we try to figure out why someone is asking a question.  We assume it's in a home environment unless otherwise stated, which is why you got the initial response you didn't like.

I don't know the answer to your NIM100 firmware question.  I'm assuming you've googled for the info, which is why you came here.  If nobody here knows the answer, you could try the DSL reports forum, as there are a bunch of techies over there who don't participate here.  Although I think the best answer you'll get is someone who can tell you what firmware is on their NIM100; I could be wrong, though.  I suggest you give some context if you post there, otherwise you may get more answers that don't help you.

Also, as NIM100s are used in networks outside of Fios, you may be able to find forums unrelated to Verizon that can help.  Maybe even Reddit...
