Hello. I have internet with the Verizon gateway modem/router. The unit is in an upstairs room and in my basement my phone , iPhone 15 pro, does not connect to the wifi, although my streaming stick for the tv does. I have a new modem/router and was told from Verizon I cannot have two modems at the same time. Anyone know if this is true? I guess I can get a wifi extender on my first floor to boost the wifi into the basement??

Customer's service type is unknown, assuming Fios.
You can have two routers on the same network, provided they don't cause an IP conflict or DHCP conflict.
It is generally a bad idea to have multiple Fios routers on the same network, because they would fight for dominance over the extenders if you have any.
An extender backhauled by WiFi is strongly discouraged. Always wire a wire between the router and the extender for better speed and lower latency.
