Adding a second computer to internet

Recently purchased a Gateway NV79 laptop w/ Windows 7, installed an ethernet switch to connect laptop w/ existing desktop, and switch is connected to Westell modem provided by Verizon when subscribed to DSL a few years ago. The old Windows XP desktop remains connected to internet through the switch with no noticable change.

Worked w/ tech support on phone for nearly an hour trying to connect laptop, but no success. Seemed unable to find network adapter, though it's clearly installed and laptop's device manager says adapter is working.  I ordered a new Verizon installation CD (can't find old one), hoping that it might do the trick.

Does anyone have experience setting up a wired home network, particularly one that uses a network switch connected to modem? Or does everyone else use a router? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

The above links will describe how to connect computers in a wired network.  These are for of the common Westell modems provided by Verizon.

Did you try unplugging the Xp machine and connecting the new computer to the same location on the switch?

There aare a couple of variations of switches which require slightly different cable.  This likely is not your problem but the possibility is there.  Read the info on the links for additional info.

One additional item to my previous post.  I aaaumed that the Westell unit is a combination modem and router.  You should have received a CAT5 crossover cable to connect the modem/router to the switch. Advise the techs at the store what Westell unit you are using and they will know which cable you should use.

Hi,

I started with DSL services years ago ,and have msn premium service, the installation disc is old ,

I am trying to add the software to new computer- especially virus /spyware programs .I can't seem to get the software to download /install successful. I am thinking loading it from new installation disc would work. I have gone to MSN premium order disc site,it is never up, I have tried the contact us tab - that is a dead end. I have emailed verizon support requesting a new installation cd- with a standard response which reflects no reading my email or helping with how I could get a another installation CD.

any help suggestion appreciated.

Thanks for trying to help. I spoke with tech suport the other day on another issue and asked about getting another installatiion CD- they claimed didn't need it just download everything- even after explaining didn't work

Peace,

Verizon has not partnered with MSN for years. The new install disks wouldn't support it even if they did get you one, because they no longer offer it to new customers. It's my understanding that if your account is linked to MSN, you can continue to use it as long as it works, but they don't actively support any MSN features.
