Can I install new equipment before Verizon tech installation/appointment?

I’m upgrading Fios internet from 100/100 to gigabyte and also upgrading set top boxes to Fios tv one. Next available appointment for tech to come out is not until October, so I completed the order and now I’m waiting for appointment day. They’re allowing me to pickup the new router and new boxes from the Verizon store this week, but they told me if I try to use them now before the installation of the new set top box and internet upgrade they won’t work due to them not being “activated” (whatever that means). Is this true? I’d like to start using new equipment immediately as I wait for tech appointment.
