Consistent: download speed <1.4Mbps, upload .2Mbps

On the Turbo plan, though since I've been testing in the last 30 days I can't exceed 1.5Mbps download and .25Mbps upload. Line consistently tests "OK", but speeds are unacceptable, especially upload. Need to resolve or will have to switch providers.

#1 Do you have a computer that runs Windows?

#2 Is this Apple Airport Extreme router, a wireless router?

#3 If so, is wireless in the router turned on?

#4 If it is a wireless router and wireless is turned on, what level of wireless security is it set to?

#1 I don't have a computer that runs WIndows

#2 The Apple Airport Extreme router is a wireless and a wired router. My speeds are the same whether I am plugged into the router or accessing the router wirelessly.

#3 The router is turned on.

#4 Wireless security is turned off.

See my last post above about getting the transceiver statistics from this modem (Which could explain why your connection is going slow).

#4 Wireless security is turned off.

If Wireless security is turned off, anyone in range can use the wireless network. Which is another reason that could explain why your connection is going slow.

Consider settings some sort of wireless security, to see if that resolves the issue.

If you need any help, doing this please post...

A good place to start is to connect to the Westell directly  (http://192.168.1.1) and look at the transceiver statistics. In particular the up and downlink speeds. These represent the lesser of either the Verizon Provisioned speed, or the highest speed the modem was able to negotiate with the Central Office.

Just because you bought the turbo plan and are paying for it, is no guarantee that the copper pair between you and the Central Office will actually allow that speed. (Yes Verizon really will sell you speed that you can never get)..

So if the transceiver statistics show that the link supports the provisioned speed, then you need to look more carefully at your computer settings (do you have enough buffers and are they large enough) and router settings.  If the transceiver statistics are considerably less than the speed you are paying, no amount of tinkering with the computer or router/modem will help. You need to get Verizon to come out and test the speed they can get at the Network Interface box. If they cannot get the speed you are paying for at the Network Interface Box, downgrade your plan, or switch to FiOS because there is nothing that Verizon is willing to do.

If they can get the provisioned speed at the Network Interface Box, the issue is the inside the house wiring. That can often be improved by changing the filtering strategy, and putting a DSL filter at the service entrance, and connecting the phone jack that goes to the DSL modem/router in front of the DSL filter.

Good luck.

Unless I am mistaken there modem is a not a modem combo.

As addressed on http://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm the webmaster says can run on the Mac if you install Wine. And since the tool on http://www.dslreports.com/faq/7553 is a Windows App, I have an idea...

Directions to the OP (the person who started this thread):

#1 Download the tool that is addressed in http://www.dslreports.com/faq/7553

#2 Download and install Wine onto your Mac.

#3 Setup the Mac with the following Settings:

IP: 192.168.1.3

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

b) If you do not know how to do this, please post.

#4 Disconnect your computer from behind the router and connect it to the modem.

#5  Install the tool that is addressed in http://www.dslreports.com/faq/7553

#6 If that fails to detect the modem, press and hold the reset button on the back of the modem while you turn off and back on the power to the modem.

#7 Once installed, press CTRL-ALT-F7 at the same time.

#8 Go to the DSL Tab (this is where the transceiver statistics are).

--

Now if this fails:

#1You could go get a friend's / co-worker's / relative's Windows Computer, and use that tool as addressed in that FAQ.

#2 OR Go get a another modem, that is a modem combo so you do not need to use Windows (or need to run a Windows App).

#3 OR Cancel Verizon and go somewhere else...

--

While I do not have a Mac, when I..

a) setup my computer to use that sample settings.

b) connect my computer to a modem that is not a modem combo.

c) Intall that tool as addressed in that FAQ

d) Pressed those keys at the same time

I could get to the DSL tab.
