I am seeking input from users with experience with with the new Gigabit Internet connection - speed, quality of service. I get varying speeds with my 100Mb connection. So how reliable is this claim? My current 2 yr contract is less than 30 days old and I am asked to pay $30.00 extra for the bragging rights.

If you're getting varying speeds with 100Mbps, moving to 1Gbps won't solve the problem. Best to troubleshoot your current 100Mbps service first, before planning to move to Gigabit. A faster connection could just make the problem worse, if your issue is due to a bad light over the Fiber, for example. Or if the problem is due to Wi-Fi, then nothing will change, and you're just wasting money unless you plan to upgrade the Wi-Fi equipmnt on both ends.
People are also seeing mixed results with the Gigabit product. For some, 940Mbps up and down is what you'll see, and is actually what Gigabit service provides, due to Ethernet overhead. Others are seeing mixed results, presumably because they are on busier PONs (Keep in mind, each FiOS connection is a part of a PON, that is a Passive Optical Network. The PON connects to a port at the Central Office on an OLT - Optical Line Termination). Verizon currently uses GPON tech (Gigabit Passive Optical Network), which is limited to 2.4Gbps down, 1.2Gbps up. A PON can have anywhere from 1 home to 64 homes sharing the bandwidth. That assumes Verizon has more than a 1Gbps Ethernet port on the OLT Side of things to back up the bandwidth - which they probably do if they've sold 1Gbps to you. So with that said, people have reported issues on the upload side of things with being a bit varied, which comes as no surprise. Verizon has provisioned a speed that is grossly oversubscribing the PON by design, on the assumption (and based on statistics) that people will hit the download harder than the upload. After all, you're not paying for the guaranteed Gigabit, but the connection should provide acceptable enough performance that for $200 or less, it's better than what Cable will provide. Unless you're in a Comcast/XFinity area where you're within the magic 500ft range of where Comcast will install "Gigabit Pro", which is an actual Metro Ethernet product.
In the future, if Verizon moves to GEPON, which can do Symmetrical 10Gbps, or NG-PON2, which can do 10Gbps down, 2.5Gbps up, or a newer tech, you'll find 1Gbps far more sustainable on FiOS.

Yep this is the standard explanation. Its like a electrician showing up and saying well the panel shows 110 not sure why you're receptical is getting 50 volts lol... But check your hardware port and make sure its set to receive 1.0 gig. Check you're cable or ethernet make sure its not damaged. Also if possible use or borrow someone else's computer and check it, also try plugging the cable directly into the computer (if you have ethernet connection) if not you need an adapter. If you have a fairly NEW computer there should be NO issues simply plug and play.

if you are using a laptop via wi-fi you will not get the posted speeds, The 800-900 speeds are only valid on an ethernet connection. Secondly, which most people forget is that you must also have a gigabit ethernet port, otherwise it will top out around 104 mbps.

I just had my Fios internet service upgraded to Gigabit from 75 mbs. BIG MISTAKE! No my internet is SLOWER than before, and my router has LESS RANGE. I've contacted tech support, which told me I needed a CAT 6 cable instead of the CAT 5 the installer put in. So I put in a new cable (on my own dime) and that helped with the desktop computer connected directly to the modem (although it's only at about 350 mbs). But who used wired connections anymore? Most of my devices are wireless, and I'm averaging about 45 mbs on the 2.8 Ghz "n" network and about 65 mbs on the 5 Ghz "ac" network. And the 5 Ghz band drops off dramatically 15 to 20 feet away. Just two rooms away from the router on the same floor, my 5 Ghz signal is barely useable. I can get a signal at 2.8, but it's slower than what I had with my old router. I am so mad at Verizon now. When I called this morning to complain and ask for my old router back, I was told that I needed to request any changes to my order within 24 hours! So I'm stuck with bad internet service for two years under the terms of my agreement. If you are considering upgrading, BE VERY CAREFUL. Test it thoroughly as soon as you get it. Double check the work of the installers and demand they upgrade cables to CAT 6 so you can at least get over 100 MBs. And call withint 24 hours is you discover that it's worse service than what you can get with 75 mbs. Because if it's anything like my experience, it will be worse. And if you wait to complain after 24 hours, you'll be sorry.

I also had the gigabit setup installed 3 days ago, used to have 50 mps, now with the new Router do get close to 900 mps at ithe router speedtest and just tested at 698 mps down and 756 up at this Pc - have lots of ethrnet switches and cat 5e and cat 6 cabling all over my home. Are highly satisfied with this FIOS performance (but getting this upgrade through Verizons CS as an existing customer was a nightmare) but the tech and the technology is just super. I use WIFI only for data on a smartphone. the tech who was very knowledgeable told me to use only the 2.4 part of this new router - he warned me several time s to NOT connect to the 5 speed of this new quantum router - "he mentioned something like that works only very close to that router - not in the whole house" so try that - set your wifi to that lower frequency. (I am no expert on that - just relate what a very knowledgeable Verizon Installer told me 3 days ago>)

I have been in IT for over 25 years and I have never seen network speeds drop like this. I just had FIOS installed. Like everyone else, the speeds are not even close to what they should be. I did the Verizon speed test to the ONT and I get 940 down. OK great but you mean to tell me roughly 600mbps are going to drop from ONT to Verizon Router/PC??? Really??? From ONT, I have cat5e to router, roughly 10 feet (installed by Verizon). My PC is connected to Verizon Quantum router via 6foot cat6 patch cable. PC is showing 1GB connection. My download speeds per Verizon's test was like 360. You mean to tell me I dropped like 600mbps from ONT to my PC? I called support and they had to contact next level engineer and the response was maybe a firewall issue etc, really a firewall blocking 600mbps!!!!! I tried another PC and had same results. Look I get there are all kinds of different variables that can cause problems, but if you are going to gaurantee me over 900mbps up to a point then drop 600mbps to less then 20ft from that point then something is wrong. I switched to FIOS because Xfinity was horrible in my area, but the funny thing is after all the internet issues with Xfinity, their internet was more responsive and faster then FIOS, well when it worked to its full potential. I am just tired of paying for services I dont receive and these huge companies make millions/billions in profits evey year.

Same here I've been in the IT field for over 30 years. I'm getting speeds of 4 to 500 download to 400 upload. The technician that came to my house today said those were incredible speeds and hes never seen anything as fast as that. I live in Rhode Island and I have been in networking for over 20 years not quite understanding how some people I getting 700 down and 700 up sometimes I'm getting 300 down and 400 up. Was just curious what other subscribers are getting.

If in IT for all those years then you know WiFi is at best depending on the radio and on the processor power and other factors will get around half of listed direct ethernet speed via a cable connection with a laptop or desktop with top of the line processor and again a ac/radio in the device, and maximum amount of ram etc.
not everyone has that.
my speed this morning: (I redacted my location information on the top)

The WiFi on the FIOS Quantum Gateway is just plain terrible. You will need to purchase a third party Wi-Fi router to get decent Wi-Fi speeds. Verizon has replace my FIOS Quantum Gateway twice and there was no improvement in Wi-Fi speeds. I currently have an Apple Time machine as my Wi-Fi and it works at about 10x the speed of Wi-Fi on the Quantum Gateway. I am upgrading to an even faster solution that should provide even better Wi-Fi performance (the Linksys AC5400, $213 from Walmart).
My FIOS speeds to the house are very good. You can test those online at Verizon.com or with the My FIOS app on your phone. You should always check that speed first since it carries all the Internet traffic. If it is not working optimally, then any speed test results will be skewed.

Mine had one day it was 500 500......other then that it varies DOWNWARD. Its not my hardware........NOT my router, NOT the ethernet cable.....obviously people should NOT be experiencing different speeds IF hardware is up to date. There is NO such thing as hub distance anymore not with LIGHT.......the issue is Verizon needs to make sure these customers issues are being addressed vs just saying WELP we show it good on our end. Even if I plug my ethernet cable directly into my laptop iM not getting the speeds??? WHY?? I mean it did once or twice and that was it.......While each situation needs to be looked at there are some of us who have eliminated the supposed configuration and or hardware issues.......which honestly in my case never existed.....

Update- So I take my laptop OUT to the ONT and wire directly to REMOVE any possibility of "interferance" so guess what.....SAME LOW SPEEDS........so I choose to REBOOT the ONT.......and GUESS WHAT now I get 275 up and 510 download.....SO riddle me THIS batman.....IF the verizon website TEST's the ROUTER at 900 up and down HOW could that be accurate if after I REBOOT the ONT my speeds get better??? THE ONT Is NOT my hardware.......so Verizon someone is lying and it isn't me........

I already answered your other post.
you must call as I said and have tech services troubleshoot the issues.
millions of other customers are having no issues. So it has to be on your end.

Where is it? I'm paying for it along with a host or ridiculous charges , changes, orders and a host of taxes , may I please have something out of it .. my hotspot does most of the internet browsing because my gigabit connection is non existent or just does not reside at my residence .....

On a gigabyte Fios connection? that is not going to happen.
first off I don’t know what the installers do testing wise in Pennsylvania but in NY they make sure the speed is there before they leave your residence.
many times if the speeds are not at minimum they notify their office and your provision speed is then fixed.
the only speed test is from Verizon’s site here. https://www.verizon.com/SpeedTest/instantinternet.aspx
Test it and see. 60 megabytes is no where near 1024/1024 or Verizon’s 940/880 up to listed speeds.

I upgraded last night from 50/50 to gigabit. Now I get about 50/800, connected directly to the ONT.
Verizon claims the slow download speed is because "the order hasn't processed yet". I guess the upload increasing to 800 was coincidental?
Verizon Support seems completely clueless.

Actually they gave you a proper answer. It is a simple provision problem.
Many times there are central office issues getting your services balanced for the lack of a better word.
So they were not clueless.
What you need to do is wait 24 hours or so then call 1-800-VERIZON and have them test the connection from their servers to your home router.
wifi will not be accepted as any speed result. You need to be connected via ethernet to a home computer with a nic card able to obtain the higher speeds.

The Gigabit service is a fraud! I've been struggling with this for 5 weeks now. I've tried EVERYTHING and never got more than 300 mb download on Ethernet. Verizon support claims that my router gets 950 mb so the problem is my desktop. HP diagnosed my 1 gigabit capable PC, had me restore Windows 10 and refresh drivers - lots of work, no improvement. Ran new Cat5e cable, replaced network card, got new router from Verizon - nothing! Finally had a tech come to my house. His laptop ethernet connection got only 336 mb. He said he NEVER saw anyone get close to gigabit performance. I understand the "up to" claim, but one-third is pretty poor. WiFi is poor, too. I was much better off with Comcast Xfinity - the TV platform and phone service is FAR superior to Verizon. I wonder what the mythical device is that can achieve gigabit performance. I only wish I had read this forum before my 2 year commitment. I've spent many hours and a good bit of money chasing the impossible speed. Fios IS cheaper than Xfinity, but you truely get what you pay for.

^^exactly what the last poster said. “You get what you pay for.” We’re saving $50 a month over Xfinity but man the TV guide sucks and the gigabit speeds are a joke. My hardwired PC only generally hits 150 down but the full 880 up. The tech said he never sees advertised speeds in philly. This was the second tech at my house too. I can live with 150 down which means my Wi-Fi ranges from 80-150. The funny thing though is with Comcast, if you paid for 25, you were provisioned for 30 and got 30. If you paid for 75 you were provisioned for 80 and that’s what you got.
What gets me is verizons site shows me getting 200 down, speedtest.net and dsl reports show around 120 generally but fast.com often only shows 2-3mbps! Again, that’s the hardwired PC. Just all over the place and I know Wi-Fi will always be slower than my Ethernet connection.
Im ok with the speeds since were on a great promo. However if I was paying for the 50/50 tier and was only getting one third of that I’d be livid. We’ll be back to Comcast as soon as the two years are up. *X1 truly is better.*

Just got the 1gigabit internet service installed after numerous calls. For the past 2 days, speed tests have only (down/up) speeds of 8/2 MBits (yes mega!!) where 1024/1024 mbits are to be expected ( or just a little bit less in the 900 MBits neighborhood. But not LESS THAN 10mbits down and upload speed!! Obviously something severely wrong — just could not contact Verizon due to weekend!! So be careful to select this supposedly fast internet service!!! I am not very happy right now!!
