HP Printer will only connect on open network

I have an HP Photosmart 7520 that used to work.  Now it won't connect to my quantum gateway router UNLESS I turn off all security (WEP, WPS, etc).

  • If I type in the WEP password, it just fails to get an IP address
  • If I use the WPS setup button, it says "progress stopped"

I found some posts where people said that turning off Wireless Direct sometimes helps, but I had no luck with that.

The problem is not your router. What you have to do is completely remove the printer from your network. Drivers and everything. You must make sure no trace of it remains.

if it is anything like canon or Epson wireless printers, you must run the set up program via downloading the drivers from the HP site.

Make sure you have a printer cable available so the set up can proceed. The cable is only used for initial setup and can be unhooked after the printer is setup.

You may also get a LAN option to setup via looking for your network at home. If it finds it then it will connect to the LAN and should be seen by cell phones, tablets, and if the simple drivers are installed any computer on your network.

I have multiple printers on our network. They function flawlessly. My wife’s mother has a new canon all in one and the unit set up from unboxingto use in 20 minutes.

her HP also shows up in her network printers list. Both were set up first via usb printer cable then it worked wireless.

take your time and it will be easy to install.

Is there a firmware update available for your printer? Some older HP printers have problems with newer Wi-Fi routers. HP may have fixed them, but I typically don't hold much hope with that.

I would disable WPS and make sure the router is set to only WPA2-PSK AES mode. Slimming down the wireless settings as much as possible can help the printer connect when using the Scan feature. Also, disable auto channel scan on the 2.4Ghz radio of the router, locking it to either Channel 1, 6, or 11 - whatever gives the best performance and reliability in your home.

Also... try a shorter password or something less complex. Or try renaming your network. The printer may be having problems storing the Wi-Fi settings due to length or invalid characters, for example.
