Just had fios installed TV and internet.
ONT has coax and cat5 running to verizon router and coax also running to cable box
I would like to use my own router instead of the verizon router. I have a netgear nighthawk and I need it to get wifi throughout my house.
I also have a buch of ports forwarded for a surveillance system.
I tried plugging the cat5 from the ONT directly into my router but it wouldnt connect to the internet.
Is this possible

I have a good idea of whats up here. Just to re-confirm, your nighthawk is connected, and you can access the internet from it?
I believe the problem is that your Nighthawk is handing out LAN IPs in the range of 192.168.1.X, which is also what the G1100 hands out, so the G1100 and Nighthawk network are overlapping.
You'll need to change the IP range that the G1100 uses for the set top boxes. To do this, please login to the G1100 (Easiest way to do this would be to plug an ethernet cable from the G1100 into your computer). Go to http://192.168.1.1/ and enter the username and password listed on the side of the router.
Once you've logged in follow these steps:
Click My Network at the top of the screen. Then click Network Connections on the sidebar of the page that will appear.
Click on Network (Home/Office).
Click the Settings button at the bottom of the page.
Look for the portion of the settings page which says Use the following IP address:, you should see 192.168.1.1. This is what you have to change.
Change the address to 192.168.5.1.
You just need to change two more settings before moving on. Scroll down a bit to the IP Address Distribution section. You'll see a "Start IP address" and "End IP address" section. Change these from 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.254 to 192.168.5.2 and 192.168.5.254.
Your configuration should look like this (images may not always show up due to them needing moderated manually):
Lastly, click Apply at the bottom of the page. The Verizon router will reboot. Reboot your set top boxes, and check for connectivity.

I thought I had it and lost it. Turned off all routers for over 2 hours. The Nighthawk initially did not hook up, but on a whim I hit the reset button and it worked!
Then I hooked a LAN output to the G1100 input, plugged it in and waited while it initialized. TV on but two problems. No TV guide info and the remote response was very sluggish. I figured that it had a lot of data to download so I went away for a while.
Came back and my program data was restored and all was cool.
But.... I had to go and hit the widgets button. It said that the STB had no connectivity and I had to reboot it. And if that didn't work, I had to reboot my router.
Rebooted the STB. Nada. Rebooted the G1100, nada.
On the program guide, it now says that there is no connectivity. It didn't say that before. I don't understand how I could go from almost there to no connectivity.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have not done it yet, but I believe you need to call Verizon and have them switch your ONT from coax to Ethernet. They can do it while you are on the phone. I am not unhappy with the G1100 but I have at least 20 plus wireless devices, a Wink hub, plus the STBs. I believe that you can use the Verizon router as your MoCA adapter by plugging the WAN into your router's LAN port. I have heard the apps, etc all still work. Another option is purchasing an Actiontec MoCA adapter to replace the Verizon router. The adapter allows your guide, on demand and DVR to use Ethernet to Coax. Please correct me if I am wrong.

When you say switch your ONT from COAX to Ethernet. How do you know if this is done? Currently my setup has both a COAX and Ethernet feed going into my G1100 router. I'm guessing based on that my Ethernet is active?

Yes most likely if you already have an ethernet port run to the WAN port of your G1100, your ONT is likely already provisioned.
Test this by unplugging the coax from the router and checking if you still have internet connectivity.

Thanks, ok so Ethernet is enabled and I mostly have this setup. My only issue is I cant get On Demand working, its telling me I have no connection. The TV Guide is working correctly though. Now if I move the ethernet from the lan on my router to the G1000, the On Demand works but then my regular internet doesnt work as it keeps connecting me to the FIOS router as the main router. The odd thing is when I click connected devices it shows the FIOS router as 192.168.5.157, but I cant actually get to it since I'm on a 192.168.1.X addresss. Any ideas?

Glad to hear the setups semi-working so far!
Regarding on demand, please ensure that your setup is like the image below. The Ethernet cable has to be connected to the white WAN port of the Verizon router, and connected to the LAN of your own router as this diagram shows:
Make sure nothing at all is plugged into the yellow LAN ports on your Verizon G1100 router.
If your network is already setup this way, I apologize for misunderstanding you, please let me know.

No problem, the network cable is definitely correct. (Lan port on Netgear) to WAN port on Fios.
Whats even more odd before when I said it was getting a 192.168.5.X address before, if I look at connections now it shows a 192.168.1.3 address yet, I can't even access it from my browser.

This is perfect. Releasing the DHCP was what I was missing. Once I did that and plugged my OnHub into the ONT it lit right up and works great. No more Verizon router! I did have to speak with tech support beforehand to have them enable my Ethernet port.

I followed this guide and while I got the STB boxes to pull guide and VOD info, I can not get the actual VOD video to play, it shows on the timeline it is playing but I get no sound or picture.
Just to make sure as well, I went and just used the Verzion router alone and everything worked as normal.
I have the G1100 Router and I'm using a Netduma R1 as my primary.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello!
If your STBs are pulling guide info, then everything is setup correctly. The issue is with the Netduma router, I've tried searching around the net on how it handles certain tasks, as from what I've read its supposed to protect users from DDoS and all sorts of other things.
The Verizon STBs get their VOD files from Verizon's VOD servers, which lives in the IP range 108.57.152.0/21 (At least thats what my boxes use, but I'm 99% sure thats network-wide).
Doing a quick packet dump from my pFsense router, we can see that it streams the videos in the format of "MPEG TS", meaning the video files are uncompressed. I've seen single 720p video files eat up 10+ Mbps of constant bandwidth.
Is it possible the Netduma is seeing this as a DDoS or something of the like? I wish I could help you more, but your router's configuration goes really in depth according to their website.
Basically, try to look into whitelisting / setting up QoS rules on your router to allow full, unrestricted access to the 108.57.152.0/21 network, and also possibly look into if your router blocks MPEG TS Packets, that could hopefully solve your problem.

Oh, I think I see the problem!
From some testing, I believe the Verizon VOD servers only allow access from Verizon IPs. According to the netduma site, your router has a "hybrid VPN" setup, meaning your IP won't look like a Verizon address.
Take a look here: https://netduma.com/features/one-click-vpn/, please make sure the VPN is not enabled for the IP of the Verizon equipment. (Or just for testing, disable the VPN entirely for now).
If disabling the VPN still dosen't work, it might be worth reaching out to Netduma support to see how how to stop the Netduma from blocking the video feed.

Justin thanks for your help. I decided to use the Fios router first and have that do my devices and then just plugged in my Netduma into a LAN port of and just have my consoles running on that so I can still use the Geo-filter. Eaiser and I get to keep all the Verizon services.

So I went back and am trying to get everything running through my Netduma.
I have properly bridged the G1100 and have the Netduma handling everything, Handing out IP's, all my STB boxes work and are also assigned IP's from the Netduma, get guide data, even Remote DVR and in screen caller ID work, but for some reason I still can not get VOD to playback, it loads up everything, then when I hit play it just goes to a blank screen.
When I go back the the video it does show that it has been playing since I get a resume playback option.
ive also could firmed all services are up including my server through the STB VMS system info.
I'm so confused as to why everything else works but this one feature.
Am I missing some port forwarding rule for VOD that I do not see.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the info. Just what i was looking for. Just switched from the free router (shown in your post) to the dual channel router (also shown in your post). I am not satisfied with the new router's performance in terms of its wireless output. Also, i am experimenting with different tv streaming services to maybe replace verizon's tv service, and while i expected no lag or interuption in the broadcast with the new 75/75 upgrade from 25/5, there seems to be no difference at all. I am suspicious of this net neutrality business and the throttling down practice.
I am in a small townhouse and most of my devices can not even find the high speed channel and if they do, i often lose the signal. My plan is to send the new one back and replace it with the netgear nighthawk AC1900. I'm going to reconnect the old (free) router by coaxial to the ONT, and run cat6 from the ONT to the nighthawk, then follow your instructions. I understand i must use cat6 for all my ethernet connections (the one between the 2 routers, to maintain on demand and programming info) (and the one from new router to the desktop).
Just in case i still don't have as strong a signal upstairs as i want, i ordered a range extender with good reviews, though i wonder about it's AC1750 spec not matching with the AC1900 nighthawk. That shouldn't be a problem, right? My hope is that i won't need it at all and can send it back.
My only insecurity is the order of sequence to this project and if i will need to speak with a verizon tech to make any setting changes. I read where it may take 2-3 hours for my new router to be recognized and given an ip address (?) or something, once it is connected to the ONT.
If you could assure me that i have this all straight, i sure would appreciate it. thanks!

Hello royf!
Your setup sounds almost 100% correct, with just a few changes.
First, don't worry about connecting the old Verizon router directly into the coaxial port on the ONT itself. It can remain plugged into any coaxial outlet in your whole house. If you did directly connect the coax from the router to the ONT, then your TV service won't work. The only cable that needs to be directly connected to the ONT is the Ethernet cable.
Do you currently have any Ethernet running to your router? If you are running the new Ethernet line where there previously was no Ethernet, just a heads up you will need to contact Verizon support and ask them to provision your Ethernet port on your ONT. This process normally takes a few minutes once you get through to a competent tech support rep. If you don't do this, then your ethernet port will remain physically disabled and will seem like its not working.
Good move on using Cat6, its the most futureproof and best quality cable you could use right now.
So you mentioned using the range extender. You can most certainly do this with your setup, but do note that your old router has to be made into a MoCA bridge. To do this, follow these steps exactly: https://www.justingoetz.net/docs/docs_actiontec/Actiontec_MoCA_Bridge.html (Make sure you reset your old router to factory settings first, by holding the "reset" button with a pin for 10 seconds, then follow instructions).
Fun fact, if you are still having issues streaming, 99% of the time WiFi is the culprit, not the FiOS service. If you have Coax running to most of your house, you can actually purchase additional Verizon MI424WR routers off ebay, and if you follow the instructions above you can also make them MoCA bridges, so you can use your existing coax cable to extend a wired ethernet signal! Optionally you could also by a MoCA adapter off Amazon for about $80, but most old Verizon routers can be found on ebay for around $15-20, and it just takes a few extra minutes using the DIY instructions to make your own MoCA bridge.

And also with your persistence in sticking with these guys until there is a resolution. You guys are much appreciated. I've learned a lot just reading these 7 pages.
I have the most primitive set up you've ever seen. I have about 10 feet of coaxial coming from the ONT in the basement to a spliter where 1 coaxial goes up thru the living room floor to another spliter where 1 goes to a DVR STB, and the other 1 goes to the G1100 (formerly the Verizon MI424WR, that I haven't returned yet), that sits right next to the pc connected by ethernet. From the spliter in the basement, the other coaxial goes up a cavity along the air return duct into a 2nd floor bedroom closet and along the baseboard to a HD STB. We have a wireless laptop that is used mostly in that room. I have Chromecast receivers on both TVs. Our wireless devices are my wife's and my 5S iphones, and then back to the 1st floor where we have a wireless printer and our boy's PS3. I have no coaxial outlets and no exsisting cat* wiring and no ethernet has ever been connected to the ONT.
I just retired and am looking for a way to reduce monthly bills. I've been sampling PS Vue, Directv Now, Sling, YouTube, Amazon to see if their programing could match Verizon's for less money, but the lag and disconnections were getting annoying so I thought we'd try an upgrade from 25/5 to 75/75. I video my son's sports team and like to upload them to google drive so the other parents and their kids can watch them, too. My last upload took about 4 hours for an 8 GB video. So that's basically my need for speed.
With different speed test sites, I'm getting good results. With the wired pc I get more than I expect. With 25/5, i get just about even. Even wireless upstairs gets about the same. Maybe a little less at upload. With 75/75, I've been getting into the 80's and 90's with both UL and DL, never less. Upstairs with wireless, I get about 1/2 that with DL and a little less than half with UL. 5 GHz is terrible. It's not even discovered on most devices, which means we're all on 2.4, then it gets slow. If it we're for the speed of the wired pc, the difference between 25/5 with the M1424WR and 75/75 with G1100, is not much of an improvement. I almost bought the G1100 til I read some reviews that said I could do better. So instead of renting that at 10/mo, I ordered the Netgear AC1900 R7000. I thought the M1424WR would serve it's purpose for the TV.
I'm open to any suggestions you have for making this into a better network. Thanks a lot.
