Internet disconnects and leaves and then reconnects

I have

High Speed Internet Enhanced

1.1 to
3 Mbps

with no tv plans and my mother's internet has been running 1498 KBits/Sec by 446 KBits/Sec *fine* last month. but a couple of weeks ago my internet started leaving and coming back by its self i have checked the wires and everything and it seems fine to me i have a Westell Model 327W I've done many things to try and find the problem and none of them worked i've replaced and re-cheked wires and nothing. i think my problem might be that when i go into gaming the problem starts is there any way i can prevent my internet from loosing its connection while playing on a game server?

another problem i forgot to include is that sometimes the internet drops under 1.1 Mbps and then later like in a couple of hours it comes back to 1.1 then normally to 1.5 which is where is supposed to be i've contacted support about this and they could not help me.

another correction i've checked if it was my games causing the problem that my internet kept leaving and the game is actually not the problem. i belive there are only 2 things that could be causing this and that would be my ISP or my modem and most likely i've checked my modem alot and made alot of test and i think is the Verizon ISP that has the problem. without even using the internet it leaves and comes back.

Your internet speed is at 1.1? For gaming, you're most def going to be losing bandwidth and will need to upgrade your internet speed.

no 1.1 is the lowest that it goes the highest is 3.0 gaming most of the time runs fine i dont run hardcore games like world of warcraft or battlefield 3 i run decent games that only take a couple of bytes per second and i never use it for something that takes alot of internet and yes i have been thinking of getting a better upgrade but there are no higher upgrades than 1.1 to 3.0 the only other option is upgrade to fios and thats 100$ per month which i wont be willing to take while already having issues with verizon on a lower internet.

i ask for help because my current internet is slow and not working well and you recommend an upgrade so i can pay 130$ for 1-3 Mbps probrably with another 100$ when verizon fixes their own wires?

Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from your modem?

#3 If you don't know how to get that info:

a) What is the brand and model of your modem?

b) If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to it: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?

#4 If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to the modem, even if you know how to get the Transceiver Statistics from the modem: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?

I can tell you already that you are losing sync. This is due to a line issue, whether length or noise. Please visit this page on your 327w for me, and copy/paste the Transceiver Statistics as a reference point:

http://192.168.1.1/transtat.htm

Alternatively, it could be at: http://192.168.1.1/htmlV/transtat.asp

The speed as reported on your modem should never change. Also, I used to play games just fine at 864kbps/160kbps (768kbps/128kbps). It was just horrible if you had anything but one device on the network transferring data or you had to wait for a game update or upload to finish. Regardless that speed isn't broadband anymore by definition, so it doesn't bother me what so ever.

I also have a 527W and am having the same issues. Here are my transceiver stats, which seem to be quite different from the original poster in terms of the dB numbers. What do they mean?  I've tried swapping out the phone cable, and shortening the path to the modem, but still get frequent signal interruptions.

Thanks,

Rick

Strangely enough, that's a pretty good like there. Assuming it can be fixed up I see it possible to get 10Mbps/1Mbps service out of that. Right now Verizon has you at a really poor speed, but likely because they're seeing you disconnect a bit.

In this case, check to be sure you do not have any unfiltered devices, including any alarm systems which may be directly wired to your telephone line. If your DSL connection is running through an Alarm system, you have to get the DSL out of such a situation and instead use a "homerun" to ensure the DSL connection is always on. Extra devices like that can decrease your connection quality if the DSL modem has to run through it.

In addition, make sure you do not have any devices with the filters installed backwards. The filters only accept a connection one way. Anything installed backwards will create a similar situation as to what happens if you have no filter; a disconnection, and higher attenuation, and lower margin on the line.

Failing all of that, ensure the wiring in your home is secure, and the jacks are free of corrosion both in the jack itself and behind the jack where the wiring connects up. Also, ensure you do not have static, humming, buzzing or other noise on your line. If you have any of this, you will need to check out at your NID to see if such noises are still present. It also wouldn't hurt, for testing to see if your statistics are any different at the NID.

Away from that, call Verizon and have them check for damaged wiring on their end. Corrosion and old pair gain setups can cause issues similar to what you're having.

I point to http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10490

#1 An original or very old style NID with a spark gap and ground wire can even get spiders in it that could cause an issue. Inspect the NID first before thinking of changes or wiring.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_interface_device

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demarcation_point

Running a good quality wire CAT5, no need for CAT6,  directly to the NID for the DSL modem jack may help. That is what I had done with mine. Depending on the number of loads or amount of wire in the house could also cause issues. But if the user's signal quality is not being pulled low due to a wiring issues, it would usually indicate a problem elsewhere. Unless there was noise being picked up on the premises wiring. Wire DSL directly to the NID and install a filter there for all other in house wiring may help. There used to be available what was called a NID Filter, and I am sure you can still get them.

Ideal Connection if house wiring is an issue, or very old, and lengthy. Install a filter / splitter at the NID.

Run CAT5 directly to the NID location, and install a dedicated jack for the DSL modem.

Remove all in house wiring from the NID.

Connect piece of CAT5 from the NID to the filter / splitter input

Connect all existing phone lines to the phone side of the filter output.

Connect the new DSL CAT5 directly to the NID before the filter / splitter, or to the DSL side of the filter / splitter, depending on the device purchased.

This will take all the existing premises wiring out of the picture unless there is a short circuit or excessive load somewhere in the house.

At this point all the single filters could be removed because the DSL is filtered at the NID.

#2 You can test outbound to Giganews. But giganews has/had a test that will check your inbound connection from their servers to you.

I heard from another user that

Giganews is being watched very closely because of multipart binaries, and pirated material. MP3s and Video Content. 7 years ago you could get 10-20 MP3 albums in a single day, and that was with a 15/5 fios connection. So they started providing an encrypted connection service for an added fee. I have not messed with news groups for a very long time. Now with deep packet inspection, and other enforcement, I would not even think of it. No news I want there. But there may be content that people want? They may even be checking and limiting speed from that domain. Never tested. But let me see. It looks as if reverse trace routes and speed tests are being blocked by Verizon from Giganews to my router.

#3 Have the provider run a local loop test to see if any problems are indicated. If there are, then they could run the test with everything in the house disconnected, except the new DSL modem connection. If issues are still indicated, then the DSL provider needs to make connections on the local loop. Another user told me that they had issues when it rained, and it was because construction had left a splice box open on a line somewhere.

I'm also wondering .On a second reflection, it looks like the upstream margin may be a bit lower than it should be for your line. I suspect there's stil a circuit issue that needs to be addressed by Verizon.

If these disconnects are accompanied by slowdowns rather than line noise on the landline, that'd be a completely different problem. That's not too common to have happen, but it can and does happen. Modem logs can help identify that if you're seeing a slowdown, showing a PPP session drop but not a full DSL drop and drain. If you'd like to put a copy of your log up on pastebin.com and then supply the URL to the paste to us, that would help.
