Quantum G1100 Router suddenly not keeping 5ghz connections

For the past 2 weeks or so, my G1100 router will no longer connect reliably at 5ghz. My devices will connect and then immediately disconnect or refuse to connect at all. If I reboot the router or change anything in the wifi settings that causes the router to reset the wireless, 5ghz will work again for a day or so, but then the same thing will happen. I have tried many different 5ghz channels, but none fix the issue for more than a day or so. I have no issues with 2.4ghz, only 5ghz.  Prior to this problem recently, everything worked fine for over a year. I posted over at DSLReports and one other person has the same issue, but no one has any resolution to the problem.

Has anyone here seen this issue?  Does anyone know if Verizon pushed a firmware update over the last 2 weeks?

I advise everyone to consider being their own Wi-Fi router (Such as Eero Pro 6), disabling the wifi on the G1100 and using it only to feed Fios channel information to the STB. It is ludicrous to pay the exorbitant amount of money Verizon wants for their routers, as apposed to buying you own and have the ability to use them with another provider should Verizon no longer suit your need.

Yea, I give up. I bought a netgear nighthawk X4S. Planning on putting it in AP mode. Anyone have experience doing this? What are the nesseccary steps?

Real simple. Leave the Quantum router plugged in from the ont to the wan port as it is.

take the Nighthawk and take the rj-45 cable from its wan port and plug into the Fios Quantum Gateway Router in one of the available LAN ports. (There are four of them)

then access the Netgear via login the http://www.routerlogin.net

then enter the password included with your Netgear. Go to the advanced tab, and select access point mode. Click the toggle box to activate it.

once done go into the Quantum router and login 192.168.1.1 enter the login name and password for the Fios router. Then click on the wireless tab and turn off the 2.4, 5 Ghz modes and the guest network on the Quantum router. Then click save and then log off.

now you should be all set.

the Netgear router has this information in the user manual http://www.netgear.com

just type in your device name or number and download the manual.

It's been a week now, still on firmware 01.04.00.12, and 5GHz continues to work. I'm not really sure what happened to make it start working. Using the 5GHz network at this point are Google Home Mini and a Nexus 6P.

I had removed everyting from 5GHz, but periodically would give it a try with the 6P to see if it had become stable. I had just reset my 6P to get back to the production Android rather than the beta and maybe that was the key.

At this point, I've added the Home Mini back into the mix and so far, so good! That's been a few days.

Today I will try adding an iPhone on the latest iOS back onto the 5GHz.

At this point I'm suspecting the beta version of Android that I was running on the Nexus 6P. If the iPhone doesn't kill it again, then I'm pretty sure the Nexus and beta Android were the cause. Or at least, it was the trigger for the issue that will be addreses with the new G1100 firmware.

Thanks for the feedback.  Please perform and factory reset on the router. The router is suppose to download the newest firmware. Then test your devices. ~carlton

I thought the firmware upgrade was automically performed at night. Will the factory reset do it immediately?

Do I really need to perform a factory reset in order to trigger the new firmware to be installed?  I have a lot of customized configurations (port forwarding, MAC authentication... etc) which I really don't want to re-enter if I don't absolutely have to.

I just did a factory reset and it does not work. Thanks Verizon for wasting more.

Yep according to this link https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r31729006-Networking-G1100-5ghz-not-working~start=300

the issue is not fixed, in fact the new trial firmware has only been received by some few customers and they state it does no improvement.

The firmware they are talking about in that thread is 02.00.01.05, so perhaps this one (.07)  does fix the issue.

Is there anyway to get the new firmware without having to wait for Verizon?

You can save off configs and then import them back in.

But do you really need to do a factory reset to get the new firmware once it’s out? It seems not. Previous posts indicate that the update will be pushed out overnight. Or will the reset allow you to get it ASAP once it is out?

I have Firmware  02.00.01.07 for a week or so now and the 5G has not gone offline.  I've not needed to reset anything. So fingers are crossed it continues that way.

Lucky you!

If Verizon posted the lastest firmware at https://www.verizon.com/support/residential/internet/equipment/open-source-software, I would try upgrading the router using http://192.168.1.1/#/advanced/fwupgrade.

I keep powering off and on the router every week, hoping that it would check for new firmware and install it, but no joy so far. I am still at 01.04.00.12.

I was not getting the udpate, and could not stand the thought of reconfiguring everything after a reset to (hopefully) trigger the update.

So I had an older NetGear N600 setting around. I installed OpenWRT firmware on it, took the MAC from the G1100, and all is well. Even better throughput is up to the point that some webpages load noticeably quicker. That's noticed on pages that are not necessarily large, but have lots of parts.

NetGear and OpenWRT for the win!

I got the update today.

Most people should have.

If not, try rebooting router to see if it downloads update.
