Router/extender question

Is it possible to use a friend's discarded (but functional) Quantum Gateway router as an extender for my G3100?

In general, the answer is probably yes. However, you will need to keep the G1100 from acting like a router. The G1100's DHCP server would need to be disabled at the very least. Will you be connecting the G1100 to your LAN using a coaxial cable or an Ethernet cable?

If you are using coax between the two, note that the G1100 supports MoCA 2.0 on the LAN side, with a maximum speed of 500 Mbps. The G3100's MoCA is version 2.5, with a maximum speed of 2.5 Gbps, which should be backward compatible. If you're using Verizon Fios TV, I'm not sure how mixing the MoCA versions would affect the set-top boxes (STBs) in your setup.  If you're using an Ethernet cable, connect to one of the LAN ports on the G1100 instead of the WAN port.

On the G3100, you should be able to reserve an IP address for the G1100 using the Add static connection feature of Network Settings --> IPv4 Address Distribution -->  DHCP . To set the DHCP address, you will need to know the MAC address of the G1100 on the LAN side. Download the Fios Quantum Gateway USER GUIDE and look at section 5 under CONFIGURING THE HOME/OFFICE NETWORK. You will need to connect a laptop or desktop to the LAN and log in to the G1100 to see that page. (The User Guide for the G3100 is here.)

So, in addition to shutting off the DHCP server on the G1100, you would configure the LAN  side of the G1100 to use the same IP address that was set aside in the G3100. I don't think the G1100 will query for a DHCP server to get the address from the G3100 directly. 

You may also want to try setting the G1100 to bridge mode and see if that works for you. I am not familiar with how to do that myself. You should look at this archived version of DSL Reports post on G1100 in bridge mode and this earlier Verizon community forums post.
