The role of the FiOS Connection Wizard isn't limited to troubleshooting. It also simplifies the setup and maintenance of your Internet connection by

  • Setting up a new computer on your FiOS connection

  • Setting up a wireless Internet connection for a computer

  • Displaying your wireless network's SSID and WEP encryption key

  • Setting up a wireless network after you supply the SSID and WEP encryption key.

Does this order seem awkward? I first read this through and thought "wow, it will give me the SSID and WEP key before I supply it, whose WEP protected network can I try to hack with this tool?"

Well, at least that is how I read it before completeing my 1st cup of coffee.

If you run it from inside your network it should give you your SSID and key. If you have your key it will setup the wireless connection for you. If you run it from a hardwired connection it will provide your key from inside the firewall. From what I have read the Verizon supplied routers now come with a default SSID and key supplied on a sticker attached to the router. The tool will simplify entering that information into your computer. If you do not have the key it will assist you in setting one up from inside your private network with a hardwired connection.

Kathleen,

Will this support Windows 7 a/t soon?  I just tried to install and it won't.  Perhaps you also need to ammend the min req's under OS and say 7 not supported to save others the time of downloading and attempting to install.

Regards

🙂

Kathleen,

Like one of the other responders I am interested in knowing when the Mac OS version of this software will be released.  I am hoping that Verizon will remember that they have a number of users who do not run the Windows OS.  It seems unfair to provide extra help to only one group of users.

I tried to download this VZ In Home Agent but the installation was halted.  This is the message I got:  "Error 1316.  A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file:  C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\Q43BM7WX\CW_setup.msi"  OK - what does that mean?  How is someone with limited computer knowledge supposed to use the Verizon tools when this happens??

Something such as this would indicate you have an issue with your internet explorer or your computer. Contact Microsoft or a local computer tech if you are experiencing related issues.

flarobyn,

I have never experienced that error, so there is no way I can tell you for sure what the problem is. But I Googled "ie error 1316" and got lots of hits. After reading though a number of them, all seemingly related to the installation of different products on Windows. none Verizon, it appears to me the common thread was this error occurred  while trying to re-install a program, or installing an upgrade to an existing program.

So, have you previously installed the Verizon In Home Agent and are now trying to re-install? Or installing an updated Version? If so, the solution seems to be to go into Control Panel and un-install the program first, then do the new install. If not, perhaps it is a corrupted download; have you tried re-downloading the file?

Other than the above, I don't have any other ideas at this point. As I said, I have never experienced this, so I am just winging it. But I hope this helps.

You have a legitimate question about how is someone with limited computer knowledge supposed to use the tool when this happens, but I hope you will keep in mind that is a Microsoft Windows message, not anything from Verizon, and Verizon cannot control what the message says. Now, what is causing the message to be generated may very well be a Verizon error, I don't know, but Windows is full of incomprehesible messages like this. So at worst Verizon shares the blame here....  Smiley Very Happy ...at least IMHO.
